Syncroscopy 2005 Calendar Competition
by Mick Chaplin

Syncroscopy, the company which produces Auto-Montage, asked for Auto-Montage users to send in images. From the entries, 12 would be selected for their 2005 calendar. There was also a prize of an I-Pod for the best overall image. Thinking nothing ventured, etc. I entered 7 images. To my surprise 3 of the images were accepted for the calendar for the months of February, May and August (although not selected for best overall). I was even more surprised when I received my copy of the calendar to discover which organisations the other successful entrants came from:
January; School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Adelaide.
March: St Barts, etc, University of London.
April: Havard University.
June and September: Tallinn University, Estonia.
July: Natural Resources, Canada.
October: California Academy of Sciences.
November: Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia.
December: Natural History Museum, London.

It does show that in some areas enthusiastic amateurs can compete with professionals.

The seven entries are shown below (click on thumbnails to see larger versions and associated notes on techniques used). The three accepted for the calendar are shown first. The first one (fly head) and the last one (fly eye) have already appeared in this section.
