The first Powysland Museum was founded by members of the Powysland Club in 1874. To mark the Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887 the museum was transferred under trust to the town of Welshpool. In 1974, the running of the museum became the responsibility of

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Powys County Council and in1990 the collection was moved to a former warehouse on the Montgomery Canal. Three years later the museum won the Gulbenkian Award for the most improved museum in a rural area. The displays illustrate the history and development of life in Montgomeryshire from the earliest prehistoric settlers to the 20th century population. On show are exhibits reflecting the history of local agriculture and crafts,the Victorian kitchen, the canal and railway systems, the Montgomeryshire Yeomanry Cavalry and World War I. A wonderful collection of old maps and photographs is also on show. Temporary exhibitions, reflecting various aspects, of Montgomeryshire's history, complement the permanent display.
