We lived on Beech Grove, across from the Catholic Church. I attended Tulketh Secondary Modern. Some of my friends were Karen Nicholson, Eva Henry, Carol Ibision, Grace Woods, Linda Gee, Karen Kirby, I'd love to hear back from anyone who knows the whereabouts of any of these people. 11/12/98 or December 11, 1998 Happy Holidays!

Just to say thank you to the wonderful people of Preston and local communities and villages. We have visited Preston, Broughton, Goosenargh, and other places trying like most Americans to find their ancestors...We took 11 years of travel back and forth and only in 1996 were we successful. My wife is a Singleton of Broughton Towers and Chingle Hall. Her Grandfather left Preston for Canada and became the Superintendent of the Canadian Railroad, and construction to Victoria,  B.C. and beyond. All she had was a graveyard photo from Quebec and some letters pointing to Broughton Tower and Chingle Hall. The search was started in 1985. We were lost until 1993 when we met some friends in Broughton-Goosenarh area and in turn met someone who had history of the area...search, search, search and our prayers were answered....We now enjoy the love and friendship of lost cousins who knew there were relatives in North America but also lost by time.

We love your beautiful City and in 1996 it was our gateway to the "OPEN' Golf Tournament in Lytham-St.Ann's. Your hospitality is the best in the world and your flowers and gardens and great pub food make one wish they could stay forever. We plan to come back in 1999 to enjoy new relationships and if we could stay for a few years we would...but employment for an american is hard to come by...When you have time visit Chingle Hall, the Northwest's most haunted home. It is wonderfully owned and maintained by Preston's Dr. Trevor Kirkham. By for now, love to hear from anyone, that knows of a good place to stay at reasonable prices because the US dollar is not as good as the pound.

Enjoyed last Preston Guild and hope to make the next one. Isn't it 2002? Visited Newman College (old Larkhill). It hadn't really changed at all.

My father was stationed at a fighter base in or near Preston during WWII. We are now trying to recall the name of the base. We think it might be "Membry" or some similar name. If anyone can shed light on this, please contact rowepres@aol.com Coincidentally, my father's mother was a Vermonter named Bessie Preston. Thanks, Preston Rowe, Burlington, Vermont, USA.

Hi,

I was born in Preston 29 years ago in what was then the Royal Preston Infirmary (and apparently now a shopping centre) and am interested in the origin of my last name. As I have been lving in Canada since I was 6 years old, I have not been able to collect much info. The last name is Sharples (which, I believe, is a common name for the area). What does it mean? I would appreciate any info or leads you might have.

If you decide to reply could you please e-mail to chris@concrete.bc.ca?

Thank-you. Chris Sharples Vancouver, British Coloumbia

I lived in Leyland from 1935 to 1947, but attended Preston Catholic College from 1943 to 1947. I understand the College no longer exists. The only
contact with former school friends was several years ago and consisted of one person. If anyone went to PCC at the time I was there or who recalls those days, in
Preston or Leyland, I'd be happy to read them. I left England 38 years ago. My  name is Bill Rigby, email: lofcbillyo@aol.com. My home is in Arizona. Names of class mates I recall: Frank Culshaw, Peter Diaz, Frank Cooney, Fred Houghton, John Southworth, Vincent Waterhouse, Robert Burns......Some of the girls from either Winckley Square or the convent with the brown uniform - whose name I forget: Sheila O'Donnell, Sheila Haydock, Philomena Warren, Betty Slater..most of the girls, I guess, came from Leyland. Thanks for posting this probably quite vain attempt to say hello to long-lost friends and acquaintances...

Regards, Bill Rigby

After that I joined the home WRAF and was at NRATCC at Barton Hall nr Broughton. I'd love to hear from anyone who remembers me, or if anyone can put me in touch with the Coulthard sisters Sandra and Elaine. I'm also searching for my cousin Maureen Mayor, probably born in 1942. Her dad was my mum's twin brother and his name was Alfred Mayor. He died as a POW on the Death Railway in W.W.II. Love your web page. Thank you for taking the time to do this. Regards from Diane

Hi, my name is Gary Wright and I used to live in 7 Whiteholme Pl, next door to the BANCROFT's up until moving to Australia with my family in 1966. Unfortunately I have not been able to get back to Preston for a visit, alhtough my mother has on a couple of occasions. The last time being in 1987. I still have an aunt who lives in Penwortham. It would be interesting to see if there is anybody out there that remembers me or my family. I am sure there are people who remember my mother. She was 'famous' for boiling Porterhouse steak by mistake and giving it to the dogs. (Stupid women)

I found this site by pure accident because I was looking for a PNE site.

Even after all these years I still follow PNE and would love to see them live. One of my late father's (WILLIAM) prized possessions was an autographed copy of Sir Tom Finney's autobiography, plus the program from Sir Tom's last home game, as well as all the newspaper cutting about the last home game Sir Tom played. Every so often I take these out and have a look through them and they remind me of Preston.

Even today, I can still remember going to the park at Easter for the egg rolling. Those were the days.

Anyway, I think I got carried away with myself. Sorry if I took up too much room on the message board.

If you would like to correspond with someone from the land down under then my e-mail address is <gwright12@hotmail.com>. It would be great to talk to people from the old home town.

Oh, and one other thing. Congratulation on a great site.

Kind regards,

Gary Wright

If somebody of you knows some Spanish students (of Andújar - Jaén The earth of the olive tree") that are living in Preston, making practical of company, we would like that you transmitted him a greeting of their friends and professors of SAFA and that you give them spirits and hopes because they need it. He/she notices: Laura and Mª del Mar dance the sevillanas very well.

I would like to be added to your Folk page. My name is Ron Scott, I was born and raised in Preston. Lived at 21 Stanley Place until I left to work in Lytham at 15. To cut a long story short I emigrated to the US in 72 after a stint in the Scots Guards and a short career as a Prison Officer (did some training at preston "Nick"). I would love to get in touch with anyone who grew up around the same time I did. My wife, Anne, is from Chorley, so we often have words about Preston Vs Chorley. I need help from Prestoners.

Hi,

My name is Elizabeth, and I'm so happy to have found your web site about Preston. It's been 30 years since I left, but I still have many family members there, and I'm able to visit fairly often. Thankyou so much for having this page so that I can visit more often. It brings me little closer to home every day.

Any chance of a Preston ex pats page or would you happen to know of one? There are many people in Preston with whom I've lost contact, and I would like to try to find them if possible.

Thanks again from Elizabeth Kelly

Seeking info on my great grandfather ROBERT IRVING, who was born in Preston in 1847. His parents were Robert IRVING, Sr., and Ann AYRES. The family came to the United States in 1849. Robert, Jr., became a master plumber in the New York/New Jersey area, and was the contractor that installed the plumbing at Ellis Island.

I would be particularly interested in contacting relatives still living in the Preston area and in learning anything of the Irving and Ayres ancestry.

Subject: preston family history

Annie Armstead wrote to her uncle a George Berry in Melbourne on the 6th.Dec 1854 from 16 Hudson St Preston. Her father James Armstead was a builder employing some 500 men. ( The large building at that time I believe was the restoration of the Preston Cathedral but I do not know if he was engaged on that task). He had recently purchased a Dairy farm close by and turned it into beans and corn to provide food for his horses. Two other people get a mention in the letter- a John Beevers and a John Holmes. Her sister (unnamed) went to school at Kirkby Lonsdale.

I wonder if there are any descendants of these parties reading this page? if so contact me.john.mills@macmillan.com.au

Hello Prestonians!

I have lived in Proud Preston my whole life; me and all my ancestors!

If anyone reading is related to the Prestonians JOHN and PRISCILLA CAIRNS (nee: Wilkinson, married 1874), or their children; ROBERT, EDWARD, WILLIAM, ELIZABETH (married Mr Eden), JOHN, JAMES, GEORGE or JACK then please get in touch. Incidentally, all children were born in the 1870's, with the exception of Robert (1891) of whom I am descended. ROBERT married LILIAN HAMILTON HALL (daughter of WILLIAM HAMILTON HALL) in 1918. One of their children was my grandfather. I can trace no further on the Cairns' side as although JOHN CAIRNS was born in Preston in 1857 (according to the 1881 census), there appears to be no record of his birth. If anyone has any ideas on how to tackle this obstacle, I would also be very grateful.

Thanks for creating an excellent website!!

I'm researching an ancestor of mine, a one Rev. Richard Thistlethwaite, who was employed by a Holy Trinity Church in England in the late 19th century. Unfortunately, I don't know which one! I think it was in or around Preston, definately in Lancashire. If anyone knows of such a church, please e-mail me. Thanks!

Dear WebMaster O'Gara:

I have just begun to do some research of my family history, which has led me to inquire on your website of Preston, England. I ask a question: Does Tulketh Castle still exist? My family research has led me to the Travers family, who lived many generations there before coming to the US. I didn't see anything on your website, or maybe you know where I could search to find info or download a picture for my research.

Any help you could give will be greatly appreciated.

I was given a letter that my father received from his Aunt dated May 1972. The letter amongst other things told him about a cousin of his CLARA ?, who was living at Farnworth, she had just had her 93rd birthday. Her brother ROBERT DAVIS, who was aged 89 years old was living in Australia (what part?) He had 5 sons, all of them 'doing well' as Town Clerks etc: and all their sons were attending University (This family I think must be in Australia) DOES THE SURNAME 'DAVIS' RING ANY BELLS? I would love to hear from anyone who may know anything to help me get in contact with any descendents of CLARA ? and ROBERT DAVIS. These people are relatives of mine whom I would love to hear from. They would be connected to the DEWHURST family. My grandfather came from Preston (Aqueduct Street) but when he married he lived in Fleetwood where my father was born.

Hoping to see a !!! above my e-mail A.S.A.P.

Hello,

Fantastic site! I've recently found out that a significant part of my family is from Preston, and I'm considering visiting the area. Could you tell me if The Preston Journal still exists? My great-great-great-grandfather (Laurence Dobson) was its proprietor in the very 1800's. Better yet, could you tell me if you've ever heard of the poem "Rambles by the Ribble"? I was told that my great-great-great uncle (William Dobson), a poet, gained some notariety for having written it -although I'd never heard of the peom itself.

I'd really appreciate any information you could provide -your time permitting.

Sincerely,

Jillian Maloney

According to family tree information that I have, some of my ancestors lived in that area in the early 1500's. And I am interested in finding any information that may be archived there that may confirm the information that I have.

I have saved the address for ordering the book on "Finding Folk". I just wanted to compliment you on the web-site, the content and appearance are outstanding. I will no doubt revisit the site again. Briefly George Newsome (born 1502) married Alice Kingley (born in Inskip, Lancashire County) they had a son named John who was married to Grace Preston (born in Preston, Lancashire County); this is the beginning. It would truly be amazing to me if I could find some records there that are still intact. It would make me want to come there in person to look for other records.

Hey, just thought I'd call in and read a bit about the town I'm going to be working in.

One thing: call me an ignorant Widnesian if you will, but I'm sure that there was a famous battle in Preston in 1715, when George I took steps to quell the Jacobite uprising lead by the Stuart Old Pretender. I just thought you'd like to mention it in the 'History' section, as even I knew a bit about that one!

Anyway, nice to see that you have so much pride in your home town! I hope

I'm going to like it there!

All the best
