Earlier this year, the Pet Shop Boys started their own label, Spaghetti.  They had toyed with the idea for a while, but only went ahead after finding Dave Cicero, a 21 year old Scottish singer, synthesiser player and songwriter.  "We just thought he was talented," explains Neil. At first they simply paid for his demo tapes.  "We got started by someone giving us free studio time."

The first Spaghetti release was Cicero's "Heaven Must Have Sent You Back To Me" and in December the third Spaghetti release will be another Cicero song, "Love Is Everywhere", this time produced by the Pet Shop Boys.  It is their first musical involvement in a release, and they are at pains to point out that "he's written all of it".

The third single to be released on Spaghetti, Cicero's "Love Is Everywhere", was released in December and reached number 19 in the British charts in February.  "It was very exciting" they say, for their part, "like starting all over again".  Their only disappointment was that Cicero was not asked to perform on Top Of The Pops.

Cicero's next single, "That Loving Feeling", was released on 6th April 1992 and was also produced by the Pet Shop Boys.  The b-side "Splatt", is another of his dance instrumentals.  The video features the football team sponsored by the Pet Shop Boys : PSB Riverside.

Cicero's first LP "Future Boy" is released in June.  The original LP was recorded last spring and produced by David Jacob but which as been added to and augmented since then.  It is now all produced by David Jacob aside from "Love Is Everywhere" & "That Loving Feeling" produced by the Pet Shop Boys, "Heaven .... ", which has been remixed by the Pet Shop Boys & "Middle Class Life" which has been remixed by Pete Schwier.  Cicero also added at the last moment two instrumentals, "Cloud 9" and "Sonic Malfunction", which he produced himself.

The big news is that my third single, "That Loving Feeling", is released on 6th April.  I recorded it on an early demo tape and played some of it to my management company who really liked it and asked me to work on it a it more.  In fact it now sounds nothing like my original demo version.

My first album "Future Boy", is out at the beginning of May, when I'll also be doing some PA's.  My current favourite on the album is a song called "Then".

Other major news is that I've been asked to perform the theme tune to a film.  It's a brilliant thriller called "The Soldier's Wife" (Later re-named to "The Crying Game") directed by Neil Jordan who made "Mona Lisa" & "A Company Of Wolves".  The track is titled "Live For Today" and is actually a duet with Sylvia Mason-James.

I had a great time making the video for "That Loving Feeling".  It was filmed by Eric Watson at Chestnut FC on a freezing cold day in March.  The lads in the video with me are members of the Riverside team which used to be sponsored by the Pet Shop Boys and the referee is none other than my minder Dainton who tried to steal the show and get in every shot.  It took a whole day to film and I play a goalie saving loads of goals while my girlfriend, played by a model, watches with some friends.  There are also scenes where the players muck about in the showers and then have an after match drink.  Even though I'm a keen Hearts supporter I hadn't played for so long that I ached all over the next day.

On July 20th Cicero released his fourth single, a new version of his first single, "Heaven Must Have Sent You Back To Me".  This was a remixed version by Dave Cicero of the album version, which itself was a Pet Shop Boys remix of the original single. The release also contains a new Cicero instrumental "Jungilism".

The video was directed by Chris Lowe. "We couldn't get any video directors cheap enough," he says.  "Well, actually we looked through loads of reels by cheap video directors and they were all crap so I thought I might as well make a crap one rather than someone else doing it.  I didn't even charge a fee."  It was filmed in Chris' hometown, Blackpool, partly on Chris' own handheld camera.  "My idea before we went was that Cicero wore swimming trunks, a black plastic mac and sunglasses, just walking out to sea.  The whole thing was an excuse for me to get back at video directors for all the pain and inconvenience they cause to artists, so I got Dave dancing in the sand dunes in the rain, in the night, wrapped in just a pair of swimming trunks.  I also made him go on the "Revolution", loop-the-loop ride, three times in a row.  We were just playing it by ear, there was no great master plan or storyboard."  The girl in the video was chosen by Cicero on the day of filming in Blackpool.

When he edited the finished video Chris says he "wanted it to look very flat and graphic, and I wanted it to have lots of things going on at the same time."  Originally he intended there to be four simultaneous squares of action on the screen, though in the end he compromised and had only two simultaneous images.  "I really enjoyed it," he reflects, "but it's a shame the weather wasn't better."

The video was shown twice on "The Chart Show" (Major UK chart programme in the early nineties), but rather disappointingly, the single only reached number 70.

You've probably read elsewhere that the video for "Heaven" was directed by Chris Lowe.  He's pretty tough to work for and he had me dancing on a beach in Blackpool one night in the pouring rain wearing nothing but my swimming trunks.  I'm very happy with the finished video though.

I told you about my album last time and you're probably wondering why it hasn't been released yet.  Well, we've had all sorts of production problems but it's definitely going to be out this August.  Chris & Neil have helped remix about four of the tracks and I produced another two myself.

The cover has actually already won an award for best design which is brilliant.  They took a photo of me and whited bits out and I was totally amazed by the result.  I'm really pleased with it.  I hope you enjoy "Future Boy" and thanks for your support.

On November 2nd Cicero (whose album "Future Boy" eventually appeared on September 28th) released his 5th single "Live For Today" (actually credited to Cicero with Sylvia Mason-James), the song which he wrote, and the Pet Shop Boys produced, for "The Crying Game".

The video featured scenes from the film mixed with Cicero being filmed in the same locations, and during half of November he toured Britain with Take That.  Despite this, the single failed to make the top 75.

"It's his best record," reflects Neil.  "I think it hurts him, his association with us.  People think we do everything for Dave.  It's funny because in fact, unlike us, Dave even programmes all his own stuff.  He really is musically very, very talented."

Cicero is writing new songs and working with Sylvia Mason-James.  A new single should be released in the autumn.  In America, "Live For Today" is likely to be the 2nd single from "The Crying Game" soundtrack.

Cicero has been signed, through Spaghetti, to EMI records.  He has decided to get a singer, and after advertising in MixMag and SKY Magazine he is currently auditioning.  "He has written some great new songs," says Neil.  "The best is yet to come," nods Chris. An album will be released next year.

Cicero is no longer on Spaghetti Records.  After a long search, they saw a singer called Bianca on "Stars In Their Eyes" imitating Mariah Carey.  She and Cicero recorded a song together, for release on Spaghetti, but then she decided that she was signing to PWL records as a solo artist so Cicero's record was cancelled.  Cicero went back Scotland, is now managed by his brother and has a record in the Scottish dance charts.  "We wish him all the best," says Chris.

There are no records planned on Spaghetti at the moment, but the label still exists.

Dave Cicero was born in Long Island, New York and raised in Scotland before moving to London after being discovered by the Pet Shop Boys in 1991. He supported "Take That" on their UK tour.

He was persuaded to return to Scotland by Academy Street Records, who fought off competition from UK record companies to sign up the singer / songwriter. His chart successes include :-

Love Is Everywhere - #19 in the UK #8 in Scotland
That Loving Feeling - #41 in the UK #12 in Scotland
Live For Today - which featured in the Oscar winning film "The Crying Game"

For the last few years, Dave Cicero has been producing tracks for other artists.  He has been joined by the award winning model and singer / songwriter, "Marianne" and together they are set to conquer the charts again.  They are taking the pop scene by storm as they perform their new single "Summertime".
