What
We Do
|
Over
the last 16 years we have taken ex-racing thoroughbreds straight from
the trainers. With the aim to help them learn a different trade, and
provide them with a safe and secure home for the rest of their days.
The stigma that goes with the thoroughbred is well known,
Highly strung, unpredictable and flighty.
But these descriptions can relate to any breed. The head strong cob,
the wilful Welsh, and the cheeky Shetland, we have all known such characters.
And yet, we have had comments at various venues, Hunting, Pleasure Rides,
and Shows, of,
"OH isn't he well behaved for a racehorse".
Educating people is just as hard as educating the horses, but given
the chance, these wonderful creatures can and will become your best
friend.
Hacking alone is one of the first things they have to learn, some take
to it very quickly and find it no problem, others have taken months
to find that confidence in themselves. We have to help them cope with
being an individual and not one of a string. We have found that force
feeding a horse with new information is not the right thing to do, so
we only hack out solo once a week to start with, to build the confidence
until it is no longer an issue.
Flatwork is mostly carried out while out hacking, with 20 mins in the
arena once a week
which will include the introduction of poles and small jumps. Everything
is done without pressure and in their own time which in turn helps them
to enjoy their new job. And the end result is a happy horse and happy
owner.
We
give them the idea then it is up to the loan carer to carry on with
the education.
All
the horses (weather permitting) are turned out every day, working from
grass means less stress.
They
are paired with a suitable companion, and this in turn becomes a lesson
in itself. Learning to leave their mate and the mate in turn being left;
vital education for his ability to settle into a new home in the future.
