Edmund Millar, CEng,
MRAeS, GAvA, was educated at Sale Grammar School and after service in the Royal
Air Force, graduated in Aeronautical Engineering from Loughborough College.
He joined the De Havilland Aircraft Company (subsequently
incorporated into Hawker Siddeley, which then combined with the British Aircraft
Corporation to become British Aerospace) as a structural design engineer in
1954, working on Comet, Trident, Airbus and BAe 146 aircraft. In 1988 he retired
as the principal airworthiness engineer for the company.
He joined the Guild of Aviation Artists when it formed in
1971 and served as its chairman in the mid 1980's. He has always been interested
in painting and has specialised in historical aviation subjects (both aircraft
and personalities).
Ed's father was the principal air ministry radio officer
(what would now be called senior air traffic controller) at various airports in
Britain in the 1930's and 40's including Glasgow (Renfrew) and Manchester
(Barton and Ringway), hence Ed's interest in portraying these locations in his
paintings.
Ed's paintings of scenes in the Highlands and Islands began
in 1983 and can now be seen at airports and museums all over Scotland.
