  June 3rd, 2011 75th.Anniversary of Sumburgh Airport

 

The next major aviation anniversary in the North of Scotland is the 75th Anniversary of the opening of Sumburgh Airport and the start of the the Aberdeen and Inverness service to Shetland. This had a major Impact on Shetland life as noted below and commemorates both Highland Airways and Allied Airways contribution to the Island welfare

1. Newspapers the same day as the Mainland.

2. Aberdeen and Inverness within 1 hour 30 mins from Lerwick.

3. Post delivery the same day as the mainland.

4. Emergency medical treatment within 1 hour 30 minutes at Aberdeen and Inverness.

All this some 2 days quicker than by ship. A social revolution.

  December 1st, 2009 75th.Anniversary of the Air Mail service from Inverness to Wick at land letter rate.
  November 19th, 2009 "Concorde - the Icon" - A celebration of a golden age in aviation.

An illustrated talk to be given by Captain John Hutchinson, FrAeS, FRIN.

Former British Airways Concorde pilot and broadcaster.

  October, 2009 75th.Anniversary of the first ever Air Ambulance contract to Highland Airways by Orkney Islands Council
  September 10th, 2009 75th Anniversary of the start of the Aberdeen to Glasgow Service by Allied Airways
  August 11th, 2009 75th.Anniversary of the Orkney Interisland service from Kirwall(Wideford) to North Ronaldsay calling in at Stronsay, Sanday and Westray on demand.
  July 28th, 2009 75th.Anniversary of the opening of Aberdeen Airport by Gander Dower.
  May 29th, 2009 75th.Anniversary of first ever air mail at the ground letter rate from Inverness to Kirkwall.(Wideford)
  May 7th, 2009 75th Anniversary of first scheduled service from Aberdeen (Seaton Airfield) to Wick and Kirkwall.(Wideford)
  May 8th, 2008 Commemoration of the 75th anniversary of Captain Fresson beginning his first scheduled service from Inverness to Wick and Kirwall with Highland Airways.
  March 28th, 2008 The 25th anniversary of the start of Dan Air services from Dalcross to Heathrow, Gatwick, Aberdeen and Manchester.
  August 2007 The 60th anniversary of the start of civil flying (BEA) at Dalcross Airport.
