Madeley signalbox. Everything's the same as when I used to visit it, but the LNWR block instruments have gone by this time, replaced by train describers. Also, the track diagram now has lights to show the progress of the trains. Also, on the diagram, Madeley 'chord' is shown. This link to connect the Stoke-on-Trent to Market Drayton line to the the West Coast Main Line, which went over the WCML just south of Madeley, was put in after my time at Madeley. Jack Woodcock, signalman at Whitmore (next box to the south) fixed it for me to visit Madeley one day in the pleasant company of Edgar Bedson. Edgar was over retirement age, but loved his job so much that he carried on working. When Whitmore closed in October 1961 Jack Woodcock moved to Wrenbury, between Crewe and Shrewsbury. When a vacancy arose at Madeley, which was closer to his home in the Station Master's house at Norton-in-Hales, he moved there and stayed until he retired. Photographer unknown.
