Carla Rees completed her BMus and MMus degrees at the Royal College of Music, studying flute, alto flute and composition under Graham Mayger, Simon Channing and Timothy Salter.

Since graduating, she has become a leading alto flute specialist, working to raise the profile of the instrument through research, performance and commissioning new repertoire. Carla plays quarter tone Kingma system alto and bass flutes, with which she is able to break new ground in contemporary techniques. She is Artistic Director of rarescale, with whom she performs regularly throughout the UK, Europe and the USA, with recent concerts including recitals at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the British Flute Society’s International Convention and Science Museum in the UK, and appearances at the Spark Festival in Minnesota, International Flute Festival in Provence, as well as tours to California and New York. Future plans include concerts in Washington DC, a collaboration with the Think Tank Planetarium in Birmingham and a masterclass course for alto and bass flute, bass clarinet and composers on the Scottish island of Raasay. She has commissioned over 50 new works for alto flute, given over 200 premieres, and in 2004 organised an international competition for composers in conjunction with rarescale and the Royal College of Music in London.
Carla teaches the flute at Royal Holloway University of London and was a Junior Fellow at the Royal College of Music from 2002-2004. She has performed flute concertos regularly since 1990, including a tour of Denmark playing the Nielsen Concerto, which was recorded and broadcast by the BBC. She has given masterclasses and workshops for flute players and composers at several leading institutions, including the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, UCLA, University of Southern California, California Institute of the Arts, Royal Academy of Music and Trinity College of Music.
Carla is Assistant Editor of Pan, the Journal of the British Flute Society, and writes reviews for MusicWeb International Website and Flutist Quarterly Magazine in the USA. She also works as a freelance photographer and has had her work published in the UK, USA, Europe and New Zealand. She has a photography website at www.carlareesdawson.co.uk
