As with other Command releases, Command Classics appeared in both stereo and monaural editions and the convention of using a "SD" suffix for stereo and "33-" prefix for mono releases was adhered to. All recordings (except CC 12001 and 12002) were produced by Enoch Light and they made on 35mm magnetic film.
The recordings were released between 1961 and 1963 and were critically acclaimed: on the occurrence of the bicentennial of Beethoven's death in 1970 Howard Klein of the New York Times included Light's recordings of Beethoven's Symphonies 1, 2, 4 and 7 in his list of the best recordings ever made of these pieces.

William Steinberg, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Chorale (This was produced in the post-Light era, the only record in the Beethoven Symphony series that Light didn't personally produce. But it was done by Bobby Byrne and Julie (Light) Klages, so it is almost an Enoch Light production. And I've always suspected that EL wanted to finish the series and may have worked on the production without attribution, but that's just a romantic notion of my own! Mark Koldys) |
