Robert Clapham Training

So much to do - So little time……..!

Before undertaking a walk, please do call us to have a brief discussion relating to your current knowledge and, if applicable, any previous experience you may have had.

Even day walks need preparation, and attempting any activity without taking advice from a doctor is not advised.

The Camino especially needs thorough planning and thought to ensure a successful and trouble free experience.

The average distance each day will be limited according to individual needs, but will probably average around 20k a day.

Personal training programmes should allow for this to be reasonably easily accomplished before starting - although fitness improves as progress along the trail is made.

Camino 2008 - has unfortunately been cancelled, due to family problems - and it is unlikely there will be another before next year

Camino de Santiago

Book ahead now for May 2009, prices remain the same as 2007!

This is certainly the one to do - The Camino de Santiago is a 1000 year old Pilgrim trail stretching from St Jean de la Port in France to Santiago de Compostella in Spain, some 760 kilometres in length. The Camino sprawls over the Pyrenees, through the verdant Spanish Countryside, and over the hard dry mesete plains – before rising over La Coruna through Galicia, and finally to Santiago.

Santiago is a legendary city on two accounts. The tomb of the Apostle St James (Santiago in Spanish) was discovered here. Also this ‘city of stone’ is of such great beauty. The city has the goal of thousands of pilgrims who, by following the Pilgrim’s Way (Camino) have come from all over Europe to worship the Apostle. Pope Calixtus II granted the Church of Santiago de Compostela the ‘Jubileo pleno del Año Santo’, and King Alejandro III declared this an everlasting honour which made Santiago a Holy City in the same vein as Jerusalem and Rome.

Each year, the trail is walked by tens of thousands of people from around the world – most do a small section, and add pieces year on year as their magnificent obsession continues to final completion.

All who undertake this Pilgrimage will never have attempted anything like it before, and will not intentionally be of a religious background, so the journey will be a true Pilgrimage for these young people, an odyssey of self-discovery - a trail of hardship, tears, joy and determination – a life-changing experience that has never failed to touch even the most doubting of hearts.

I have a deep-rooted affection for the Camino - and will try and organise walks in May and September - the coolest times - each year.

The full Camino will cost £1259 per person inclusive of flights from Stansted to Biarritz, returning from Santiago.

I try and use as basic transport as possible, retaining the simplistic approach that makes this such a different journey. No 5* hotels, just basic but clean accommodation in the true Camino ethos.

Please send an email for more details - You’ve got to do it!

You will need to arrange adequate travel and medical insurance before departure, and I would need to see a copy before final confirmation.

One/Two week stages can be attempted for the more wary, which usually start at Sarria (120k) or Pontferrada (200k), and end in Santiago - email me for more details.
