The Coat of Arms of HOLT of REDGRAVE |
||
|
The Holt crest is an arm holding what looks like a spear head, but may be what is described in heraldry as 'a Pheon or between two laurel-leaves vert'. | |
The shield
and motto |
When
Rowland Holt rebuilt the Hall in 1770 he embellished the
triangular pediment on the facade with his coat of arms,
made of carved and painted oak. The arms are described in heraldry as "argent on a bend engrailed sable three fleurs de lys of the first" (i.e. a silver shield crossed by a black band having three silver fleurs de lys and wavy edges). The motto was CHE SARA SARA, meaning 'What Will Be Will Be' in Italian, likely to be of fashionable Renaissance origin. It was all surmounted by the family crest, as above, and supported either side by large curving fronds. |
