The Kennels, c.1965   THE KENNELS

A Palladian water house

The house known as 'The Kennels' was built in the 1760's as part of Rowland Holt III's alterations of the Park. It was designed by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown in dramatic Palladian style, with a white brick facade and decorative rusticated ('grotesque') stonework. Its original function may have been a fishing lodge or water house sited for landscape effect. The Lake is about 5 yards from the front door!

Gamekeepers 'Wop' Garnham and Bessie Squirrel outside their home, c.1965

Until the 1970's a range of red brick outbuildings stood nearby. They may have been built in the 19th century for keeping George St Vincent Wilson's pack of hounds.
The Kennels has now been Listed for preservation.
