Admiral Wilson's hatchment

Funeral hatchment of
Admiral Wilson, Redgrave Church

On the same day, the mortal remains of Admiral Wilson were interred in the family sepulchre of the Lord Chief Justice Holt, in Redgrave Church; though the funeral was called private, there were said to be present more than two thousand persons to witness the grief of a numerous assembly of children, servants, and tenants, for the loss of one of the best of fathers, of masters, and of landlords.

Hatchments are large heraldic pictures displayed outside residences of the gentry for six months, before being hung up in the local church. The custom began in the 17th century.
There are three Bacon, six Holt and four Wilson hatchments in Redgrave Church.
