Mr Farrer returned to Redgrave in 1921, and made an inventory of the few boxes remaining after the grand sale at Sotheby's in London two months earlier.

  • signed by members of the Bacon family, mostly by the 1st baronet or his wife Anne or his son Sir Edmund.
  • receipts all connected with Redgrave rentals.
  • do. other properties e.g. Mettingham, Thornage, Foxearth.

2. five sheets of paper written in 1597 by Sir Nicholas Bacon; mostly notes of "things which needed to be done".

3. packet of deeds relating to a little property in Burgate, formerly in posession of the Hobart family, then of Rev Robert Williams, then of Rev Robert Proctor, then of Anne Proctor, and bequeathed by her to the Gilbert family, and of them purchased and added to the Burgate estate.

10 A small bundle of deeds from Broom Hills house, Botesdale.
  1. Will of the Rt Hon Sir John Holt, dated 2nd Sept 1702, to which is added in his own handwriting "Revoked by a subsequent Will made lately, but I let this remain as an evidence to prove my last. Witnesse my hand this 18th of April 1707". The will is also signed and sealed with a coat of arms of Holt.
  2. "Copy of Lord Chief Justice Holt's Will", being a copy of the will made Sept 4th 1708, with the several codicils, the last of which is dated 1st March 1709.
  3. Will similar to the last, of exactly the same dates but on smaller paper.
  4. "Rowland Holt Esq, Settlement on his Lady", dated 25th November 1729. This relates to the Manor of Hesley Hall in Thorndon cum membris, also the estate of Hesley Hall, with buildings etc; also the Church House in Thorndon, all purchased by Sir R. Raymond and Edward Ventris (trustees of Sir John Holt's Will) with money bequeathed for the purchase of lands to add to the Redgrave Estate. The former owner was Penelope Grey, spinster.
  5. a counterpart of the same.
  6. Probate of the Will of Rowland Holt Esq, deceased, dated 24th July 1739. Proved 2nd November 1739.
  7. Probate of the Will of Prisca Vanburgh, widow, deceased, dated 15th Jan 1804. Proved 23rd March 1804. She then resided at 6 Brook Street, Bath, which house she bequeathed for her life to Charlotte Holt, her sister, both being daughters of Rowland Holt and Elizabeth Washington his wife.
