WILSON FAMILY HISTORY

~

The Wilson crest:
On clouds proper a crescent Or, in flames of the first

The Wilsons were an old family from the County of Westmoreland, in what is now Cumbria, in the hilly north-west of England. Their heraldic crest of a moon holding flames has ancient mystical connotations, symbolising the pagan cauldron of rebirth, and also the Virgin Mary, sometimes depicted as resting on a crescent moon radiating light, which symbolises the womb. The Latin motto of the family is, appropriately, Resurgam, "I Shall Rise Again".

The recorded history of the Wilson family begins in the mid 16th century....
