Olly Debugger 1.10
Lets Start with the classic Olly 32 bit debugger 1.10. I have used other debuggers before and found with some of them (not mentioning any names :-) that finding standard information about your target is a nightmare. Its all tucked away under drop down boxes and by the time you have found what your looking for you have about a zillion boxes open that can’t fit on you friggin screen!! Where as Olly I think is different because most of the time everything is there right in front of you. It’s also quite easy to see the programs code (assembly) and what going on/or going to happen. See what you think by looking at this labeled drawing of Olly. A very useful feature in Olly is the option ‘Christmas Tree’ this highlights all jumps, calls, pushes, pops, returns and operands (processor register, memory address, literal constant or a label) . This makes life a lot easier to see what’s going on in the programs code. Here are two pictures of the same code taken from Olly, one of the pics has ‘Christmas tree’ highlighting turned on and the other doesn’t. Take a look and decide for your self which picture is easier for you to identify what’s going on.
When I first started out in reverse engineering I used W32dasm8.93. This was copyrighted in 1998 so it is quite old. I began to find when I tried to load more modern programs (bigger programs,, packed programs ....) in W32dasm8.93 it struggled and would usually crash. That’s when I searched the internet and found Olly which I really get on with. Everyone has different taste at the end of the day so go with what you want, but what’s also extremely good about Olly is the support out there for it. This is a huge factor for why Olly is so popular. There is tones of support for olly, like plugins, scripts, skins, Olly detection tools and most tutorials use Olly as well.
