SoftICE is a kernel mode debugger for microsoft windows. Crucially, it is designed to run underneath Windows such that the operating system is unaware of its presence. Unlike an application debugger, SoftICE is capable of suspending all operations in Windows when instructed. For driver debugging this is critical due to how hardware is accessed and the kernel of the operating system functions. SoftICE is available for Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT. SoftICE consists of the SoftICE kernel-mode debugger and the Symbol Loader utility. The SoftICE debugger (SoftICE) is an advanced, all-purpose debugger that can debug virtually any type of code including interrupt routines, processor level changes, and I/O drivers. The Symbol Loader utility loads the debug information for your module into SoftICE, maintains the SoftICE initialization settings, and lets you save the contents of the SoftICE history buffer to a file. The following sections briefly describe SoftICE and Symbol Loader. |
