Here’s a question: What can a local church do to inspire younger people to rise to the challenge to lead the church into the next generation?
These pages (and the related blog — so you can respond to my faltering answers) give some clues that I’ve discovered in my own search to find answers the question: Does the future have a church?
Oh, and the opening quote? There’s a story behind it, but the short version runs like this. After the resurrection of Jesus, his disciples went back to work—to fish, but caught nothing. Jesus calls to them from the shore and says “throw your nets on the other side”. They did, and they caught an enormous amount of fish. They were fishermen, so they knew (in theory) what they were doing, but their efforts were fruitless. They listened to Jesus, followed their hunch to trust him, pulled together and got their catch. It strikes me that the local church is in a similar situation — we’ve got years of experience of fishing, but not always very fruitful in our efforts. My own experience is that “fishing on the other side” often goes against our received wisdom and what appears on the face of it to be our “better judgement”. But when we manage to listen to Jesus, we get much more fruitful results than trusting our own hunches. The next question is—how do we listen to Jesus? |
