Dunwich Heath
We got up early and were in the car by 8.45. After a 75 minute drive we had arrived. We rendezvoused with some other members of the family in the car park by the coast guards cottages. This is a pay and display car park with a charge of £4 all day (2006).
The mornings fun was beach combing.
You can walk north to Dunwich or South to Sizewell. We walked towards Sizewell which is easily recognised by the nuclear power station that looks like a giant golf ball. Its about a 2 mile walk along a sand and shingle beach, or there is a footpath behind the sand dunes if the sea breeze is too cold. We walked about half way and turned round which meant we were back to the coast guards cottage for lunch at 12 midday. There’s a reasonable choice of roast diner or baked potatoes.
The afternoon was playtime for the children while parents relaxed and we went for a 2.5 mile walk around the heath. A trig point was found which was within 10 feet of the cliff. I don’t think it will be on top of the cliff for much long.
At 3.30pm the sun went in and it was time to go.
At great day was had by all.
