Eileen and Evelyn recently competed in the 1st Women's World Golf Croquet Championship in Cairo, Egypt. Visit the tournament website for the results.

AGM REPORT
The AGM took place on Monday 7th November. A slightly disappointing turnout this year - only 17 members present - resulting in vast quantities of food for those there.
The club made a surplus of £480 for the year, due to increased lawn and equipment hire, and more taster sessions, together with a reduced expenditure on the lawns, but we expect the lawn expenditure to increase again next year.
The meeting voted for a small increase in subscription rates for next season: up £2 to £44 for individuals. See opposite for details of the new rates.
The previous Committee was re-elected for another year.
The meeting approved a change to the Club Constitution, principally to enable us to apply for Community Amateur Sports Club status. Click here to see the new Constitution.
An upgrade to Lawn 3 is a possibility, and we will seek possible grants for drainage and surface improvement work.
Last, but not least, the trophies were presented. Click here for pictures.

CA Diploma

Congratulations to Derek Buxton for his award of the CA Diploma for services to croquet. The announcement of the awards was made at the Croquet Association AGM, which was held at the Hurlingham Club, on Saturday 15th October. The citation was as follows:

"Derek learned to play croquet in 1995 and since then he has been at the centre of transforming the club, which now has the facilities and players to be part of the national scene. He has been a pioneer in playing in external events and returning to his club to encourage others and to coach and manage club teams. Derek is a patient, good humoured member of his club. He is liked by all and participates in all aspects of club life. Since retirement in 2002, Derek has become the club secretary and also Vice-Chairman of the East Midlands Federation Committee."

Please note that Lawns 1 and 2 will be closed from Monday 10th October for essential winter maintenance. Lawn 3 will still be available for playing - weather permitting!

Mick Haytack reached the final of the All England Golf Croquet Championships at Nailsea recently. Read his report.

INTERNAL GOLF CROQUET SINGLES LEAGUE: 13 players took part, and all matches were completed. Ray Mounfield and Mike O'Brian won their respective blocks. In the play-off (best of three games), Ray beat Mike 3-7, 7-3, 7-5 to win the Buxton Vase.

EAST MIDS GOLF CROQUET LEAGUE RESULT: Long Eaton 4 - 8 Ashby B (Eileen, Geoff, Marilyn)

IT'S A KNOCKOUT!
Tim King beat Geoff Ellott (7-3, 7-2) in the final of the Golf Croquet knockout tournament. Full report on the Golf Croquet Knockout page.

BURY TOUGH LONGMAN CUP: Bury 4 - 3 Ashby (Report by Tim)

The Ashby team travelled to Bury on Saturday 17th Sept.  This was not really a familiar venue for the team (Mick Haytack had been a few years earlier).  The journey was relatively smooth but not much else was easy. The location is a former crown green bowling lawn.  The two croquet courts are about 88% size and each has three edges with significant fall away and two corners that are positively lethal.

In the morning, Mick and Marilyn came up against Barbara and Geoff Young in fine form.  Tim King had even fewer chances against a rapidly-improving Tony Phillips (those pesky Pidcock mallets being responsible again!).  Geoff kept Ashby in the hunt though with a victory that required some dogged persistence towards the end (while Tim avoided nervous watching by attempting to show off at Golf Croquet; at least his 6-7 loss was achieved against six bisques).  1-2 down at lunchtime.

After lunch, Mick was the first result to declare.  He too lost to Tony but gave far more of a fight than Tim had managed.  Tim then put the match back in the balance with a win against Barbara.  This was far from conventional (no surprise there then), with Barbara temporarily misplacing her legendary precision (the pair of Youngs both ran off the same home court on croquet strokes within a minute of each other; surely a record!) and Tim only pulling away from a period of close scrapping with some classic Golf Croquet touches: several over-hit hoop runs, running 3-back and 4-back with a single shot and having to jump a previously roqueted ball that was left stuck in the jaws of rover.  He even attempted to pull defeat from the jaws of victory by missing with the front ball on a twelve-inch peg out (the back ball hit) but Barbara was too off-colour to make this count for more than one additional hoop point.  The battle of the Geoffs decided the match.  Unfortunately, Geoff Ellott could not quite claw his way back into contention and this loss confirmed the victory for Bury.  On the other hand, everyone would have probably walked away with white hair if they had been waiting on the result of Marilyn's game.  She hung on for dear life as her opponent steadily closed the gap.  But Marilyn was still one hoop ahead when time was called and Mac was not able to hit in with his final shot. Great tenacity from Marilyn and a plucky result all round.

The lawns were tough to learn and to have been so close to a victory was a credit to all.  Perhaps manager Derek would have made the telling difference. Next year we have two national competitions to compete in so more chance to find the perfect team!

Full scores (Ashby names first):
Mick Haytack (12) and Marilyn Murray (20)  11-26  Barbara (4.5) and Geoff Young (11)
Tim King (6)  3-26  Tony Phillips (8)
Geoff Ellott (16)  26-13  Mac Hardman (16)Tim King  26-8  Barbara Young
Mick Haytack  20-26  Tony Phillips
Geoff Ellott  19-26  Geoff Young
Marilyn Murray  22-21(T)  Mac Hardman

FAME FOR EILEEN Eileen's forthcoming trip to Egypt to play in the Women's Golf Croquet World Championships is attracting huge amounts of media interest! Following a full-page feature in the Derby Evening Telegraph and articles in the Burton Mail and Burton Trader, Eileen also featured in an interview on Radio Derby.

We recently held a Croquet Day for the Leicestershire & Rutland Federation of WI Groups. An introductory coaching session ws followed by an informal tournament. Pictured (in the centre) is the winner, Liz, with her prize of a bottle of wine. Thanks to Derek and Eileen for organising, and Wendy, Michael, Dave and Richard who helped out.

Chris Mounfield was runner-up in the CENTRE STAGE competition at Solihull on Sunday Sept 11th. She had an excellent start, winning her first four games, including a well deserved 7-3 win against the eventual winner of the competition! However she then lost narrowly to Rosemary Longbottom and ended the day being beaten by Tom Brant (from Woodhall Spa). Overall she finished second and Tom third. The winner was a Tyneside player - Par Badhan. Two photos attached: the presentation to Par and Chris by Pat Wright, and one of Chris and Tom contemplating! Click here to view photos.

Four Ashby players - Ray, Mike, Derek and Eileen - played in the Yorkshire International Open Golf Croquet Championship at Ripon on Sept 2nd to 4th. Well done to Ray who won his block of six, and then progressed to the semi-finals of the main knockout competition - the only British player to reach this stage. Photos: Two photos from the Yorkshire Open (one of Ray being congratulated for finishing in 4th place and one of the 3rd and 4th place players - that's Yasser Esmat on the right!) CRAZY CROQUET & CAKES Barrie set up a tricky crazy croquet court. Twelve members attended. Mike won the competition after a play-off between himself, Eileen and Rachel, all having scored 26 in the competition. The weather kept fine. The tea was lovely. Thanks to Barrie and all who helped with tea.

The SHAKESPEARE CUP (Club Association singles tournament) was won by Geoff. Results and pictures on the Shakespeare Cup page.

For the second year running, the JIM KIRBY CUP has been won by an Ashby player. Well done to Mick Haytack, beating Derek Blow (Southwell) by 14 - 11 in a very tight final. Results and pictures on the JK Cup page.

MAKE MINE A DOUBLE: Tim King partnered Roy Ware (of Canterbury) to win the Ranelagh Cup - the English National Golf Croquet Doubles Championship - at Surbiton on Aug 27th & 28th. Derek and Eileen also took part. Read Tim's full report, with picture.

The 2005 BOTTLE CHALLENGE (a.k.a. Connoisseur's Cup)

The Bottle Challenge is a level play golf croquet competition for players with a handicap of 0 or less. This year the players were Tim -3, Mike -2, Ray -1 & Chris, Barrie & Derek on 0. The other eligible player, Nick -2, was not available. It was all-play-all 13-point games without time limit, starting at 9.45am, break for lunch at the Lakeside, & finished approx. 5pm. All the games were long & hard-fought, hardly surprising as the entrance was one bottle of wine, winner takes all. The most memorable moment was Chris beating Tim 7-5. Chris, Tim & Mike all had 4 wins out of 5 with Tim winning on hoop difference. Chris was runner up and scored the most hoops.

The Darker Side of Serious Croquet
One rather disturbing incident happened as I was watching the slow rythmic swinging of a player's mallet and found myself drifting into a trance. I suddenly realised what was happening. He was not taking aim, his aim was to hypnotise the opponent! I decided the only way to combat this unscrupulous behavior was to close my eyes before the swinging started. On past experience I thought there was ample time for a little snooze before the ball was finally struck but he obviously sensed something amiss (some chance!), struck the ball on the first swing & shouted yes before I had chance to open my eyes. I was quite impressed with his ability to move effortlessly from one dubious tactic to another. As usual, there were nit-picking claims yours truly had played the wrong balls. I was playing the right balls, but not necessarily in the right order. Surprising how players always notice opponents' faults, rarely their own. There was even a complaint about me stopping & picking up a moving ball during a game. I was only examining the ball for defects as requested by the committee, but with hindsight perhaps at the wrong moment.

GOLF CROQUET INTER-CLUB NEWS: East Dorset beat Tyneside by 6 games to 1 in the semi-final held on our Moira lawns recently.

Ashby star in the Golf Croquet rankings

Ashby now has five players in the UK Golf Croquet rankings: Eileen Buxton (55), Derek Buxton (41), Ray Mounfield (28), Mike O'Brian (26) and Tim King (7) (26th in the International rankings).  The indicated positions are for the rankings published on 22 August 2005.

Tim has been in the top twelve since 18 May, with a highest position of 6th (for about half of that period).  Everyone apart from Tim will be playing at the Yorkshire Open, another ranking event, and then Ray and Tim will have a final chance to enhance their ranking positions when they play in the English National Singles Championship (24 & 25 September).

(Report by Tim)

BANGERS AND SMASHERS: The Musk Cup

The Musk Cup is named for the sponsors, Musks of Newmarket, which is a manufacturer of fine sausages.  The owner is Chris Sheen, who is one of the top English Golf Croquet players.  The bangers and smashers were a collection of top-ranked Golf Croquet players who gathered on the weekend of 20 & 21 August to contest for the Cup.  This is a selection event, in principle bringing together the best available players.  The original plan was for eight players, although in the end an administrative error led to the need to select twelve players, as follows:

Bill Arliss (-2) -- 6-7 -- 8 wins -- 1st (beat Ivor Brand)
Don Beck (-3) -- 3-7
Ivor Brand (-4) -- 7-5 -- 6 wins
Alan Cottle (-3) -- 4-7
Chris Daniels (-3) -- 3-7 -- 8 wins -- 2nd
Ed Dymock (-3) -- 7-3 -- 6 wins -- 4th (on hoops difference)
Tim King (-3) -- 7 wins -- 3rd
John Moore (-2) -- 7-4
Nelson Morrow (-2) -- 7-4
Dick Strover (-3) -- 7-4
Roy Ware (-3) -- 7-6
Tom Weston (-2) -- 7-4 -- 6 wins

The score against each name is the one achieved by Tim King in the all-play-all block of 13-point games.  Bill Arliss showed his recent improvement after a poor start to the season and came top of the block, although Chris Daniels was the only player to have definitely qualified before the last round of games.  Tim King had to hang on for the last results but in the end was in clear third place.  This led to a semi-final line up of Arliss versus Dymock and Daniels versus King.

Tim King lost his semi-final without offering more than minor resistance (5-7, 3-7);  Chris Daniels was in fine form all evening.  Against Ed Dymock, Bill Arliss was in stunning form, clearing balls at high speed and with great accuracy.  However, he could not quite make some tight hoops run in his direction and he lost in three games.  To a large extent, Bill had run out of steam for the 3rd/4th play off and Tim King hit good form to win 7-3, 7-0; third place in his first Musk Cup appearance.  Chris Daniels also never looked in serious danger of losing the final and also won in two games.  He certainly showed the most consistency over the weekend and was the deserved Champion.

NOTTINGHAM TOURNAMENT

Derek enjoyed a successful week at the Nottingham Tournament, reaching the semi-finals of both the Robin Hood Gold Cup and the Handicap Doubles, and finishing as runner-up in the 'C' Level Singles.

Extreme Croquet and no flamingoes!

Derek & Eileen, Geoff & Marilyn and Dave were invited to play demonstration croquet and invite the public to try Golf croquet at "The Mad-Hatter's Tea Party" held at Belgrave Hall, Leicester, on Sunday August 21st.

It was an idyllic setting, an old country hall in an English country garden. The sun shone all day. The very shaded lawn we were allocated to play on measured 10 yards x 7yards! About the size of an average  lawn one would have at home. It was surrounded by shrubberies on three sides. The equipment was a Jacques garden set minus the black ball which someone had lost in the shrubbery sometime prior to our visit. We did look for it but not knowing where it may have "gone off" it proved fruitless! Fortunately we had taken a set of secondaries, but now they didn't match the peg! However we played several "demo games" and showed several families how to play a very constricted version of the game, keeping our eye on the balls when they looked as though they may run into the undergrowth!

A bonus for us was that we had time to wander around the gardens, enjoy a talk on the history of tea drinking, taste some teas, eat some jam tarts (made by The Queen of Hearts no less!), and inspect an  old wheeled sedan chair and a Brougham (2 seater closed coach).

As you can see the event had been well named. In all it was a very relaxing day, and we had a good day out. (Report by Eileen)

INTER-COUNTIES REPORT After a disappointing first day, Leicestershire (an all-Ashby team!) fought back to qualify for the semi-finals of the Golf Croquet Inter-Counties held at Southwick (Sussex) - an excellent achievement on their first attempt at this national competition. The GRASS ROOTS regional final was played at Moira on Saturday, August 13th. The weather was atrocious! Eight players from Sapcote, Southwell and North Hykeham played 5 rounds of Golf croquet progressive doubles.
The semis saw Dawn Corrigan ( N Hykeham) beat Christine Ryder (Sapcote) 7-2; and  Derek Blow (Southwell) beat Carole Salt also 7-2.
Dawn beat Derek again 7-2 in the final. Well-done Dawn!
The Final was a bit of an anti-climax as everyone had gone home except the two players, two of the spectators and the manager. The rain had been relentless and everyone was soaked to the skin!
My thanks to Geoffrey and Marilyn for setting out the lawns; to Mr & Mrs Corrigan for help in taking in the hoops after the match; and Joyce Critchley and Mrs Corrigan for clearing Lawn 3 during the afternoon.
The crowd was huge numbering 10 in all! The winner goes through to the national final at Solihull in September.

The ASHBY "A" (Golf Croquet) team continue their unbeaten run in the East Midlands League.

On Thursday 4th August they played Sapcote (at home).  The result was 11-1, to Ashby "A" ... this in spite of the Sapcote team being strengthened by the introduction of Pat Wright (ex Kenilworth player).  It was a very enjoyable afternoon - finished off with salmon sandwiches and scones with strawberries and cream!

Then on Monday 8th August Ashby "A" were AWAY to Ashby "B".  There were a number of very close games - but the "A" team (Mike, Ray & Chris) came out on top, beating the "B" team (Tim, Derek & Marilyn) 9½ - 2½.  It was as well that the match started at 5.30, because the light was fading by the end of play.  The spread laid on by Ashby "B" was much appreciated, as was the wine, provided by Mike.
(Report by Ray)

The regional final of the ALL ENGLAND GOLF CROQUET HANDICAP was held at Moira recently. Mick Haytack finished in second place, and goes through to the national final at Nailsea in September.

ASHBY ANNIVERSARY SHIELD
Seven players competed in the 2005 Anniversary Shield on Saturday 30th July. No major surprises this year: the two highest-rated players, Noel Penn-Davis and Tim King, won their respective groups and made it through to the final. Tim was on top form, giving his opponents very few chances, and had an easy 14-3 win in the final against Noel. Tim wins the trophy for the third time. Many thanks to Mick for organising the event so efficiently - even finishing by 5.30 pm! More details and pictures

ASCOT CUP REPORT
The heats for the English National Golf Croquet Singles Championship were held on July 23/24th. The Southern heat was played at Compton. The Northern heat, ours, was at Southport. The Southport Club members were very hospitable; we were all made to feel very welcome. The management was very good and the games ran smoothly.

Five Ashby members took part. (Tim, Derek, Ray, Mike and Eileen).
After two days of intensive play, Tim was the overall winner.
Three people will now go through to the Finals in Colchester on Sept.24/25th. Due to some of the three winners now being unavailable on that weekend the actual three have yet to be named.
We haven't received the official scoresheet from the tournament manager. WATCH THIS SPACE!

The Tournament was not without drama. Two other players were the only other entrants, disappointingly only seven people entered this heat.
After the first day of play one of the players decided he had no chance of winning so went home! The other players had entreated him to stay to no avail. This left the other six players to carry on. In the passage of time it would appear that with some finalists not able to play at Colchester this player may well have won a place. Ah!

It is the opinion of some of the players that this player should be reported to the C.A.under the  Tournament Regulations (page 21;P3 (h) Late withdrawal.) The player should be liable to disciplinary action so should be reported forthwith by the manager.

This may appear to be harsh, but we spent a weekend in Southport to play mainly Ashby players! We could have done this at Ashby at less cost in time and money!
Ho! Hum!

MAX MORRIS HANDICAP SINGLES
The Max Morris trophy was hastily arranged, but attracted a good turnout of 12 despite the short notice. Congratulations to Ray who won the competition for the first time - the third member of the Mounfield family to get their name on the trophy! Click here for more details and a picture.

ASHBY WINS 26 point EAST MIDLANDS LEAGUE AT LAST

After several years in which we finished a very close second or third, Ashby finally gets its name on the 26-point regional trophy with a clean sweep of victories in our matches against Nottingham, Woodhall Spa and Leicester. We had a squad of six players, allowing each person to play a singles game and a doubles game, and then sit out the third game - a tactic which seemed to work!

Our first match, against the home side Nottingham, was a lot closer than the 3-0 scoreline suggests - two of the three games being decided by just one point after time was called - and in the end the results of these games proved to be pivotal to the outcome of the whole competition.

The tournament success means that Ashby will now compete in next year's Secretary's Shield - a national tournament for the winning clubs of the regional tournaments.

For more details and full results click here.

ASHBY B v SAPCOTE report
Eileen, Marilyn and Geoff played Sapcote in the East Midlands Golf Croquet League on Sunday, July 10th. Ashby won 9-3. The matches were hard-fought by both teams on an extremely hot afternoon. An excellent tea was enjoyed by all. The Sapcote visitors thanked us for the games and hospitality. We hope to invite the members of Sapcote C.C. to come for a social afternoon in the near future.

Member and Guest Golf Croquet Competition report

An excellent evening of Croquet followed by a delicious barbecue was enjoyed by our members and their guests on Thursday, July 7th. Rain did threaten but we only had a short, light shower, early in the evening.

Thanks go to Mike, Margaret and Ray who organised the event. An excellent BBQ was cooked by John Adey (is there no end to this man's talents!). Time-keeping and scoring was competently handled by Margaret.

Twelve pairs, each of a member and a guest, played in blocks of six in an all-play-all format. Each block played all its matches on one designated lawn.

The competition was won by Mick Haytack and his son Ben with 3 wins out of 3, and running 18 hoops in total. Tim King and his guest Ian were very close runners-up also with 3 wins, but managing "only" 17 hoops. The winning team also conceded only 7 hoops compared with the runners-up 10. Well played all of you.

INTER_CLUB GOLF CROQUET REPORT
Tyneside gave Ashby the respect of fielding their strongest team for the Inter-Club golf croquet knock-out match. The welcome was friendly as always but friendship did not count when play began. It is sufficient to say Ashby were comprehensively beaten 7-0. Christine Mounfield deserves a mention for pitching in to battle in her first ranking match, giving her opponents a good fight.

EAST MIDS GOLF CROQUET LEAGUE REPORT
A busy weekend for Ashby golf croquet teams, 'A' team at Southwell, 'B' team at Woodhall Spa then all (or almost all) on to Newcastle for the inter-club match aginst Tyneside.
Ashby 'A' were made very welcome at Southwell, where the outcome of the fixture wasn't decided until the last round of games ... in which Ashby A  managed to win all three, giving an overall  result of 8-4 in Ashby's favour.  Star performer (woman of the match!) was Chris - who won all of her games.
Ashby 'B' could only manage a 6-6 result at Woodhall Spa. Woodhall's Nigel Harding devised a game plan to shoot at the hoop whenever he was in front no matter what angle or distance and proved remakably adroit. Tom Brant played steadily as ever but needed a (some may say) fortunate ricochet to score hoop 13 in the final game and save the half.

The FARRANT SALVER was won by Mick Haytack. Details here.

(played on June 16th)

ASHBY "A"
GOLF CROQUET RESULTS

Ashby "A" Golf Croquet team played their second match of the season on Sunday 19th June.  In almost tropical heat the Ashby team won convincingly (11 games to 1) against Long Eaton, who were impressed by the quality (and speed!) of our lawns.  Last month's away fixture at Northampton gave a  9 1/2 to 2 1/2 win to Ashby "A", the team adjusting well to half-size, quirky lawns and a somewhat fraught journey!  (Report by Ray)

MATCH REPORT: 14pt Association League v Southwell Saturday June 4th   In spite of the ever present black clouds overhead, rain just about stayed off at Southwell on Saturday. Ashby nudged ahead by winning two out of the three first round matches but unfortunately lost three out of four in the second round and so went down 3 - 4 in the match.   Congratulations to Southwell for a good result in their re-introduction to this competition. Well done to Marilyn for winning both of her matches and many thanks to Eileen for bringing forward her Association "debut" to enable us to field a team for the match.   Jeremy

Vi-King raid: a Norwegian Croquet experience by Tim King

Moss, Norway. May 15, 2005

As previously announced on the Croquet Association website, the Norwegian Croquet Association hosted the Jeloy Grand Tournament 2005 including the first Nordic Championships and Open events.  Both the Championships and the Open events had competition in both Association and Golf Croquet to the current World Croquet Federation (WCF) rules. The results featured domination by one nation (Sweden) and one individual (Tim King).  The President of the WCF, David Openshaw, had accepted an invitation to attend the Tournament in order to encourage further development of croquet worldwide;  Sweden is already a member of the WCF but pan-Nordic croquet seems most likely to prosper in the context of the global croquet family and Norway and Finland have submitted applications to participate in the WCF... MORE GOLF CROQUET SUCCESS

Tim King was runner-up in last weekend's Lancashire Open losing in the fifth game of a thrilling final against Ian Lines, a member of the England team who were  victorious in the Solomon Trophy in America earlier this month. Well done to Tim putting Ashby more firmly on the map and doing lots of good to his standing in the Golf Croquet World. For more details click here.

Tim also finished in the top ten in the Surbiton Golf Croquet Tournament earlier in the month.
