Ashby Croquet Club’s Winter Walk: Melbourne
– |
|
It was a bit
of a disappointing turnout compared with the previous year, but the brilliant
weather made up for it. We met up in
the centre of Melbourne, and started off by walking past Melbourne Hall &
Lake where we ran a Come & Try Croquet session on the front lawn some
years ago. After crossing a muddy
field or two, we soon reached the Staunton Harold estate and the series of
stiles inscribed with words forming a poem.
We arrived at Staunton Harold Hall a bit behind schedule but were
quickly revived with tea and home-made cakes at the Ferrers craft centre
where Margaret joined us. We then took
a detour from the original planned route, to take in the Dimminsdale nature
reserve and the glorious display of snowdrops in the woodland – many
thanks to Lindsey for recommending this.
Next on the itinerary was Calke Park, from where Eileen, Chris and
Mike headed for their cars at Ticknall, and the rest of us (Ray, Derek and
Richard) continued across the hills back to Melbourne, with some fine views
over Staunton Harold Reservoir in the late afternoon sunlight. The walk was around 8 miles in total. |
