REPORTS:

Sunday 21st September: Leicester 0 – 12 Ashby B (Eileen, Geoffrey and Marilyn)  Ashby “B” has won all of its games this season!  Thanks to everyone who has played for Ashby “B” this season, “WELL DONE!”  We should be rejoining the First Division next season.  Anyone who is interested in playing for Ashby ”B” will be made most welcome. Depending on how many want to play, and their availability to play, all will be included in the team at some point.  Players can’t play for Ashby “A” and Ashby “B” in the same season.

Saturday 20th September: Ashby A 10 – 2 Bakewell A  This victory against Bakewell was sufficient for Ashby A to win the League Division 1 title.  Congratulations to Saturday’s team of Mike, Arthur and Judith, and also to Barrie, Tim, Chris and Ray for their contribution in earlier league matches.

Thursday 4th September: North Hykeham 1 - 11 Ashby B  The 'B' Team consisting of  Mick, Geoff, and Marilyn spent a very pleasant afternoon, despite the threatening weather, in the company of  Brenda Roe, Mari Bebbington and Angela Mumby of the North Hykeham Croquet Club.  Of course, we missed Eileen.  Although it was a resounding win for Ashby, North Hykeham played well.  What a pity the Second Division of the League decided not to take advantage of  'extra turns', as in this case I am sure it would have made the match far more enjoyable for Hykeham and the result more even.  Let's hope that they can be persuaded that the handicap system with 'extra turns' works well and at this level is an essential part of the game in order for them to progress and give a far better account of themselves.

Saturday 23rd August: Ashby B 9 – 3 Bakewell B  Today was 'summer' and the  lawns were green and fast. With Eileen away at Ripon, I took upon the task of Team Captain.  It was harder than I at first thought!!  Although the final result looks very good, most of the games were very close and hard fought.  Many thanks to Martin and Rupert, who joined the 'B' Team for the first time.  I do hope they enjoyed the day as much as I did. (Report by Marilyn)

Monday 7th July: Ashby B 10 – 2 Richmond Park (Gainsborough)  The score did not reflect the games played, they were all well-fought. It was extremely wet!

Saturday 7th June: Darley Dale 0 - 12 Ashby B  The Ashby B team of Eileen, Marilyn and Geoff beat newcomers Darley Dale 12 – 0.

2006 RESULTS

ASHBY 'A' TEAM WINS THE EAST MIDS LEAGUE – with a little help from Ashby 'B'! (Report by Eileen)

Sunday 24th September: Ashby B 6 – 3 Sapcote  On a lovely sunny but breezy day, Eileen, Marilyn and Geoff fought valiantly in their match against Sapcote in the East Midlands Golf Croquet League. This was a crucial match in the League because if Ashby "B" was victorious Ashby "A" would win the League. Prestige for Ashby Croquet Club!

The score was Ashby "B" 6 Sapcote 3 with the final three games to be played. Eileen lost to Sapcote's Joyce Critchley! Geoff lost to Sapcote's John Hansen! Nails were being bitten! Time was called on the match between Marilyn and Sapcote's Christine Rider! 8 shots to play! Victory for Marilyn !!! Well-done Marilyn. The match was won by Ashby "B"!!  The score was Ashby "B" 7 - Sapcote 5. (Ashby "A" had previously lost their game against Sapcote.)

The League Trophy will have Ashby "A" on it again this year, but I hope they remember who assisted! Perhaps Ashby "B" could appear in brackets--Ha! Ha!

Sapcote finished as very close runners-up in the League.

Wednesday 20th September:  Ashby B 8 – 4 Long Eaton

Regrettably the East Midlands Golf Croquet league match between Ashby A and Southwell had to be cancelled, with Ashby being given a walkover by Southwell.

Sunday 16th July:  Wooodhall Spa 5 - 7 Ashby A

Wednesday 5th July:  Sapcote 7.5 – 4.5 Ashby A

Saturday 22nd April:  Leicester 1.5 – 10.5 Ashby B (Eileen, Marilyn and Geoff).

2005 RESULTS

Long Eaton 4 - 8 Ashby B
(Eileen, Geoff, Marilyn)

The ASHBY "A" (Golf Croquet) team continue their unbeaten run in the East Midlands League.  On Thursday 4th August they played Sapcote (at home).  The result was 11-1, to Ashby "A" ... this in spite of the Sapcote team being strengthened by the introduction of Pat Wright (ex Kenilworth player).  It was a very enjoyable afternoon - finished off with salmon sandwiches and scones with strawberries and cream!

Then on Monday 8th August Ashby "A" were AWAY to Ashby "B".  There were a number of very close games - but the "A" team (Mike, Ray & Chris) came out on top, beating the "B" team (Tim, Derek & Marilyn) 9½ - 2½.  It was as well that the match started at 5.30, because the light was fading by the end of play.  The spread laid on by Ashby "B" was much appreciated, as was the wine, provided by Mike.
(Report by Ray)

Ashby B 9 – 3 Sapcote:  Eileen, Marilyn and Geoff played Sapcote in the East Midlands Golf Croquet League on Sunday, July 10th. Ashby won
9-3. The matches were hard-fought by both teams on an extremely hot afternoon. An excellent tea was enjoyed by all. The Sapcote visitors thanked us for the games and hospitality. We hope to invite the members of Sapcote C.C. to come for a social afternoon in the near future.

A busy weekend for Ashby golf croquet teams, 'A' team at Southwell, 'B' team at Woodhall Spa then all (or almost all) on to Newcastle for the inter-club match aginst Tyneside.
Ashby 'A' were made very welcome at Southwell, where the outcome of the fixture wasn't decided until the last round of games ... in which Ashby A  managed to win all three, giving an overall  result of 8-4 in Ashby's favour.  Star performer (woman of the match!) was Chris - who won all of her games.
Ashby 'B' could only manage a 6-6 result at Woodhall Spa. Woodhall's Nigel Harding devised a game plan to shoot at the hoop whenever he was in front no matter what angle or distance and proved remakably adroit. Tom Brant played steadily as ever but needed a (some may say) fortunate ricochet to score hoop 13 in the final game and save the half.

Ashby "A" Golf Croquet team played their second match of the season on Sunday 19th June.  In almost tropical heat the Ashby team won convincingly (11 games to 1) against Long Eaton, who were impressed by the quality (and speed!) of our lawns.  Last month's away fixture at Northampton gave a  9 1/2 to 2 1/2 win to Ashby "A", the team adjusting well to half-size, quirky lawns and a somewhat fraught journey!  (Report by Ray)
