BUXTON VASE: GOLF CROQUET SINGLES LEAGUE

Internal Golf Croquet Singles League, played throughout the season. 13-point handicap matches; no time limit. Matches may be played at any convenient time (subject to the usual lawn restrictions). Due to the popularity of this league, it is now split into two blocks; the closing date for playing matches in each block is normally a few weeks before the end of the season. The winners of the two blocks then contest a best-of-three-game play-off to decide the overall winner.

The league grids are posted on the notice-board. Please enter your results on the grid after each match is played. Members may join the league at any time (subject to a closing date towards the end of the season) by adding their name to the grid. To keep the blocks equal in size, please make single entries alternately into block 1, then block 2, block 1, block 2, etc.

3 points for a win; 1 point for the loser. Any points arising from games of a player completing less than 1/3 of the possible number of games by the closing date will be excluded from the results.

Arthur was the clear winner of Block A. Block B was much closer with Ray and Martin finishing on the same number of points, but Ray went through having beaten Martin 7-2 in their game.

FINAL (Tuesday 7th October): Ray Mounfield beat Arthur Rowe 7-6, 7-3

The first game was very tightly fought.  Arthur used his two bisques wisely and he put a ball into the jaws of the 13th hoop.  With no alternative shot to play Ray attempted, and successfully pulled off, an angled jump.  The second game was much more one-sided, with Ray 6-3 up as the tenth hoop was played.  Arthur hadn’t used any bisques at this point and clearly didn’t expect Ray to run the hoop with a tightly angled five-foot shot.  Ray was delighted to win and get his hands on the Buxton Vase for the third time.

2007 REPORT

Sixteen people took part in this year’s league, split nicely into two blocks of eight. An excellent effort by everyone ensured that every one of the 56 possible games was completed before the closing date with several days to spare! Chris Mounfield and Mike O’Brian were the winners of their respective blocks, and went on to play in the final (best of 3 games). Bad luck to Rachel and Arthur who finished on the same number of points as the winners, but lost out on the who-beat-whom rule. (Chris beat Rachel 7-5 and Mike beat Arthur 7-5.)

FINAL: Chris Mounfield beat Mike O’Brian 1-7, 7-4, 7-3

Chris and Mike played the final starting at around 2pm on a club afternoon. A number of spectators wandered in as the games progressed. Mike easily won the first game 7-1 with a range of take outs and jump shots which left some spectators (but not all of them!) thinking it was effectively all over. Needless to say the performance didn't last, and Chris moved up a couple of gears to take the next two games 7-4 and 7-3 to become this year’s worthy champion.

2006 REPORT

The BUXTON VASE, our club's Golf Croquet Singles Handicap League trophy, has been won by Ray - for the second year running!

The final, between Mike and Ray was played on the afternoon of the last Thursday of the season in wet conditions that were not conducive to consistent, inspired croquet.  Ray won the first game, but failed to take a hoop in the second!  The deciding game however was very closely contested, with Mike taking an early lead, but with Ray fighting back to win at the thirteenth hoop. Scores : 7-4, 0-7, 7-6

The final positions in the two blocks were:

Block A: 1st Mike O'Brian 10 points; 2nd Derek Buxton 9 pts; 3rd Tim King 8 pts; 4th Barrie March 6 pts; 5th Chris Mounfield 3 pts.

Block B: 1st Ray Mounfield 10 points (through to final on "who beat whom"); 2nd Mick Haytack 10 pts; 3rd Eileen Buxton 8 pts; 4th Dave Davis 4 pts; 5th Susan Taylor 3 pts.

2005 REPORT

13 players took part, and all matches were completed. Ray Mounfield and Mike O'Brian won their respective blocks. In the play-off (best of three games), Ray beat Mike 3-7, 7-3, 7-5 to win the Buxton Vase.
