Played at Moira on Sunday
20th August. Unfortunately there
were no takers from any of the other East Midlands
clubs this year, but Ashby still managed to provide six players for the
event despite a clash with the Inter Counties Golf Croquet. We had
sufficient time for an all-play-all competition - even with the cup-holder
arriving an hour late due to a misunderstanding of the start time! So everyone played five games during the
day.
The weather was not
too bad – a dry morning, and then just a couple of short sharp showers
in the afternoon – exactly the opposite to what the weather forecast
had indicated.
We imposed a 1 hour
30 minute time limit for each game, and 50% of the games were finished
within the time.
It was close going
into the final round, with three possible winners at that stage, but in the
end Geoff was the clear overall winner with 4 wins out of 5. Three players all finished on 3 wins -
Mick, Marilyn and Jeremy - so the runner-up spot was decided on "who beat
whom". In this group of three,
Jeremy had beaten both Mick and Marilyn, so Jeremy was declared the
runner-up.
Plaques were awarded
to the winner and runner-up, and the Jim Kirby Cup itself to the winner,
Geoff.
