2011 REPORT
Played at Moira on
Saturday 11th June, on a pleasant day with just one shower of rain. Manager:
Derek
Lawns were tricky
following the spring drought causing some patchy turf.
Sadly only five players
competed for the honour of winning the Jim Kirby Cup, the East Midlands
Federation's 14-point handicap tournament. Even sadder was the fact that all
five players are members of Ashby CC, so hardly representative of the
Federation.
Mick Haytack remained unbeaten by beating Derek Buxton in
their final round game. He wins the cup for the second year in succession.
Derek Buxton was once
again runner-up. (Time limit 1½
hrs)

JIM KIRBY CUP GOES
TO WOODHALL SPA
Played at Moira on Saturday 5th
May.
After spending a goodly time in
the hands of Ashby players, the Jim Kirby Cup was deservedly won by Nigel
Harding of Woodhall Spa. The match was played in delightful weather
despite the less than favourable Bank Holiday forecast by the Met Office and
it was indeed a pleasure to spend the day with our guests from Woodhall. The dry
condition of our lawns pushed skills to the limit with many a ball skittering
off past the boundaries.
Marilyn & Geoff would like
to thank Jeremy for his efforts in helping to set up the lawns – not an
easy task due to the hard state of the lawns.

2006 REPORT
|
Played at Moira on
Sunday 20th August. Unfortunately
there were no takers from any of the other East
Midlands clubs this year, but Ashby still managed to provide six
players for the event despite a clash with the Inter Counties Golf Croquet.
We had sufficient time for an all-play-all competition - even with the
cup-holder arriving an hour late due to a misunderstanding of the start
time! So everyone played five games
during the day.
The weather was not
too bad – a dry morning, and then just a couple of short sharp
showers in the afternoon – exactly the opposite to what the weather
forecast had indicated.
We imposed a 1 hour
30 minute time limit for each game, and 50% of the games were finished
within the time.
It was close going
into the final round, with three possible winners at that stage, but in the
end Geoff was the clear overall winner with 4 wins out of 5. Three players all finished on 3 wins -
Mick, Marilyn and Jeremy - so the runner-up spot was decided on "who
beat whom". In this group of
three, Jeremy had beaten both Mick and Marilyn, so Jeremy was declared the
runner-up.
Plaques were awarded
to the winner and runner-up, and the Jim Kirby Cup itself to the winner,
Geoff.

2005 REPORT
Played at Moira on Saturday 3rd September. Once again, a slightly
disappointing entry of only 7 people this year: 2 from Ashby
and 5 from Southwell. As 7 is an
awkward number for tournaments, the best we could do was play as one block of
7, everyone playing either 3 or 4 games, and then the two top players (based
on percentage of games won, followed by average hoop difference) taking part
in a play-off. Block games were 1 hr 20 min time limit, most games finishing
within the time. Derek Blow was the clear winner of the block stage,
with 3 wins out of 4; three people vied for the other qualifying place, all
with 2 wins out of 3, but it was Mick Haytack
who qualified with a better hoop difference. The finalists agreed that the
play-off should be played to a finish, i.e. no time limit - much to the
frustration of the audience as it turned out, as the game went on for almost
2 hours - a very tense and closely-fought match which could easily have gone
either way, but Mick eventually won 14 - 11.
Once again, many thanks to all the Southwell
players for taking part - without you, there would have been no tournament!
