A clash with an Association Inter-Club match meant that
some strong players were absent, but eight members contested the 2009 Max
Morris Handicap Competition.
13-point games were played in two blocks, with the
luxury of no time limit.
Ray topped Block A with three wins and Barrie had two wins. In Block B,
Derek and Rupert both finished with two wins each.
In the semi-finals Ray lost to Rupert, and Barrie beat Derek.
In the final Rupert used his bisque effectively and took
an early lead which he maintained to win the tournament and take the Max
Morris trophy.
The weather was mostly kind to us (only the finalists
got a bit damp) and the croquet and the company were both enjoyable.

Seven members took
part in the Max Morris trophy and braved some very heavy showers during the
afternoon. The lawns played very true and at a good pace. Hoops were set
generously and lots of bisques were traded.
Derek Buxton won in a closely fought contest. With the
balance of the tournament in Martin Wroughton's hands, he beat Mike O'Brian
on the 13th hoop of the penultimate game but narrowly lost to
Derek in the final game played. This left Geoff Ellott and Derek tied
on 5 wins each, the victory going to Derek by virtue of his win over Geoff
in game 2.

The Max Morris
winner was Arthur Rowe who beat Tim King in an exciting final.
There were 13
entrants, including two junior members (both reached the semi-finals!) and
the weather remained good with the rain keeping off until 45
minutes after the competition ended.
Everyone
enjoyed the event, which was played as three blocks. In two of the
blocks (with 4 players) all played all and the block winners progressed to
the semi-finals. The third block had 5 players, each player having
three games, the block winner and runner-up both advancing to the
semi-final stage. Interestingly both finalists came from the block of
five, and they had not played each other in the block stage!
The competition manager, Ray, presented the Max Morris
trophy to Arthur and commented on the high quality of the croquet
played throughout the afternoon.

2006 REPORT
Played on Sunday 30th July - two
groups of five, seeded so that each group had roughly the same spread of
handicaps. Time limit 45 minutes per
game, although most games were finished within the time. Ray and Mike were the clear victors of
their respective groups, winning all four of their games. The final (no time limit) was close
throughout, with Mike levelling the scores with an impressive long distance
shot to claim hoop 12, but then missing a relatively easy shot at hoop 13,
leaving the path clear for Ray to claim victory for the second year
running. Many thanks to Ray for
organising the competition, and it was good to see some of the newer club
members taking part.

2005 REPORT
The Max Morris Handicap Singles was played on Thursday, July 21st. Eleven
members and one visitor took part.
The event had only been advertised for a few days so the response was very
good. The evening was warm but overcast. The lawns were very dry,
particularly Lawn 3. The format allowed everyone to play on all three lawns
so the "lively" balls were experienced by all on Lawn 3 at some
point!
We played 5 games each, with a time limit of 25 minutes per game. Everyone
gained some points at 1 for a win and ½ for a draw.
Ray Mounfield was the worthy winner with 4 wins and a draw. His name can now
be engraved on the tankard joining his wife's and son's names. They have won
the Tournament in the past.
Eileen, Derek and Dave organised the event with help on the night from the
other players. Thanks to all.
