ONE BALL TOURNAMENT

The One Ball Association Croquet Singles (Handicap) tournament is usually held as a curtain-raiser at the start of the season.  Usually played as a 13-point handicap tournament, time limit 40 minutes (although most games are much shorter than this), full bisque handicap equal to one third of association handicap rounded to the nearest half.  One Ball Croquet is not as complicated as Association Croquet, and Golf Croquet skills certainly come in handy.

The winner has the privilege of looking after the Gnome Trophy for a year!

2011 REPORT   Played on Saturday 23rd April (Manager: Martin)

This year's One Ball tournament was played as part of a national charity event organised by Winchester Croquet Club in aid of the Breast Cancer Campaign.  Unfortunately with only five participants we were some way short of the minimum of ten needed to guarantee free entry for the winner into the national final at Winchester on May 7th, but as it turned out neither the winner (Ray) nor the runner-up (Martin) would have been able to make it that weekend anyway.  Our players did mark the event by wearing various pink items, and we have sent off a cheque of £25 (the money we collected from entry fees) to add to the final national fund-raising total.

2010 REPORT   Played on Saturday 24th April

Six players again this year, including Cynthia making her debut after having been encouraged to play following a personal coaching session from Eileen the previous Thursday.

Going in to the final round of games, Derek and Martin were the contenders for the title having each won 3 out of their 4 games (Martin just losing his other game 12-13 to Arthur) and conveniently happened to be paired against each other in their final game. In an exciting finish, Martin eventually beat Derek 13-12 on about his fourth attempt to peg out.

Martin is the eighth different winner of the competition in its eight-year history. Eileen finished as runner-up with 3 wins including her game against Derek.

This year's One Ball Competition was contested by only six players.

The weather was good, the lawns played excellently, and the day was enjoyed by those who played.

2007 REPORT    Played on Sunday 22nd April

Eight people played in this year’s all-play-all One Ball competition.  The Rowe family was well represented, including Judith on her Association Croquet debut.

The random draw worked out perfectly in the end, as it paired Tim against Arthur in the seventh and final round, both of them having won all of their first six games!  It was a very close deciding game, Arthur just edging it by 13-11.  Unfortunately, after the big build-up, the unusual new trophy wasn’t available for presentation so it will have to wait until another day.

2007 Results:
Winner:  Arthur Rowe        7 wins

   2nd:    Tim King             6 wins

3rd:     Rachel Rowe       4 wins (beat Derek)

4th:     Derek Buxton      4 wins (lost to Rachel)

   5th:     Richard Sanville   3 wins

   8th:     Judith Rowe        0 wins

2006 REPORT    Played on Sunday 9th April

Seven people braved the rain and hail to play in the 2006 One Ball tournament.

It was an all-play-all competition. Eileen started off well with three straight wins, but Ray was the eventual clear winner with 5 wins overall.  This year’s One Ball competition is a charity event in aid of Cancer Research. Ray now has the opportunity of an automatic place in the Winchester One Ball tournament on the weekend of 22nd/23rd April 2006.

Thanks to Derek for organising.

2006 Results:

2nd:   Mick Haytack      4 wins (beat Mike)

3rd:   Mike O’Brian        4 wins (lost to Mick)

2005 REPORT    Played on Sunday 1st May

Eight people took part in the 2005 competition, an all-play-all contest, quadruple-banked on one lawn so a bit crowded and chaotic at times but everyone coped. Thanks to Derek for running the competition.

2005 Results:
Winner: Derek Buxton 5 wins, hoop diff. +12
Runner-up: Barrie March 5 wins, hoop diff. -3
3rd place: Geoff Ellott 4 wins, hoop diff. +16
