2011 REPORT  Played on Saturday 7th May & Sunday 8th May (Manager: Arthur)

The Shakespeare Trophy was contested between 6 Ashby players over the weekend of 7th/8th May. The format of the competition was the same as the previous two years - level advanced 18pt Association. With three lawns there was no need to double bank. The manager optimistically arranged the play as all-play-all, which meant five rounds would need to be completed in a day. After weeks of dry weather, there was heavy rain for over two hours on Saturday morning which slowed down the lawns and the players. In the event only 4 rounds could be completed on Saturday, at which point any one of three players could have won the competition. All the players had some spells of quality play interspersed with other spells where more errors were made.

Tim and Arthur played their decisive 5th round game on Sunday afternoon. Tim got 1st break on turn 7 after taking on a brave shot with blue from 25yds at red and yellow in corner 4, whilst his black ball was wired on hoop 1. Missing would have given a laid 4-ball break, but he hit and got going, eventually failing hoop 6. Arthur hit a short shot, laid up near hoop 1 and made a break to 4-back, but didn't get a tidy leave. Tim hit the lift shot with black but only made one hoop. Arthur took red from 3-back to rover but missed a roquet after penult, leaving Tim to pick up his break with blue which he took round to 4-back. Tim's leave didn't go according to plan, leaving Arthur a short lift shot from which he got from 4-back to peg with yellow, peeling red at rover but not managing to get a return rush to the peg. He left red in the centre of the lawn, blue and black at the edges and pegged off yellow. Tim again hit the lift shot and skilfully got his black ball from 4-back to peg, leaving the balls close together in the centre of the lawn, threatening to finish next turn with a repeat 2-ball break. Arthur hit the lift shot to win an exciting and close contest played between two players of quite different styles - Tim generally having better single ball strokes and accurate rushes, and Arthur playing better croquet strokes.

Arthur finished with 4 wins which made him the winner of the 2011 competition. He was presented with the Trophy by Rachel who had made a guest appearance at Ashby.

2008 REPORT   Played on Saturday 28th March 2009

Owing to a busy fixture schedule mid-season in 2008 and for some reason a lack of takers towards the end of the season, the 2008 Shakespeare Cup was finally rearranged for the day before the start of the 2009 season!  The late-March weather was variable: warm during the periods of sunshine, but chilly during the greyer spells and brief hail showers.

We had four entries: Derek Buxton, Mick Haytack, Ray Mounfield and Richard Sanville, so it was all-play-all with no time limits (14-point level-play games).

Mick won his first two games handsomely against Ray and Derek.  However, other results meant that Richard could still be guaranteed overall victory if he could beat Mick 14-0 in the final game – an unlikely scenario given the pattern of play in the previous games.  Astoundingly, Mick went to pieces and Richard played his best croquet of the day and trounced Mick in little over half an hour but sacrificing 1 point on the way, thus just losing out on the chance of certain victory.

However, the tournament outcome was still in the balance: the result of the other game between Derek and Ray (effectively the 3rd/4th place play-off) would bizarrely still determine who finished in 1st and 2nd place: a win for Derek would mean 3 players on 2 wins and Mick would win on hoop difference by 1 point; but a win for Ray would mean victory for Richard overall on the “who beat whom” rule.  The game seemed never-ending: Derek was in the lead but Ray kept battling away.  Mick couldn’t stand the tension any longer and had to make his exit halfway through the game.  (Actually he had to return to Daventry to resume a bridge weekend.)  Eventually after 2¾ hours of play Derek held his nerve to peg out with a 14-10 victory.

Mick was therefore the overall winner, but as he had already disappeared we were unable to present the trophy – hence no picture!

2007 REPORT

Played on Sunday 27th May

Jeremy Staley won the Shakespeare Cup (Shakespeare thermos flask?) in atrocious weather.

There were only three entries: Jeremy, Mick Haytack and Derek Buxton.

Each player won one game and lost one, the result therefore went to hoop difference.

Derek beat Mick +10

Mick beat Jeremy +2

Jeremy beat Derek +14.

Right: The winner being congratulated by the Chairman.

2005 REPORT

Six players competed in the 2005 Shakespeare Cup on Saturday 10th September, in an all-play-all league, in wet conditions for much of the day. Geoff was the clear winner with 4 wins. Ray Mounfield was the runner-up with 3 wins. Mick also finished with 3 wins but has to settle for 3rd place, as he lost to Ray. Many thanks to Mick for running the event.
