My father was a potter who worked with Ray Finch and Ivan and Kay Martin, in Gloucestershire in the 1950s. I went to Art College in the 1060s and studied ceramics as a subsidiary subject to my main which was Sculpture. I was a teacher for all of my career and retired five years ago. My dream was to be able to make pots whenever I wanted to rather than in the evenings and holidays. I have come to live in a wild and wonderful place overlooking Hell's Mouth near Abersoch. I am certainly living my dream!
I work in earthenware slipware having been very influenced by the work of the country potters of the 18th century. I have been trying to master the slip trailer most of my life. The effects of a good slip trailer can be expressive, fluid and free. The more you use a motif the more expressive it can seem. I find it fascinating that you can't ever be sure what you will draw and you can have good days and bad days with the 'trailer'. I like to write on pots and undertake commissions for commemorative ware. I make large chargers for weddings, births, retirements etc. I like to think that my pots will be loved and used on the table and in the kitchen. |
