22 March Ruthin Craft Centre 2.00pm - 4.30pm Simon Carrol Talks and Panel Discussion.

Alun Graves, Walter Keeler and Alex McErlain discuss Simon Carroll as a leading ceramicist and his dynamic, eccentric and challenging vessels.
Alun Graves – Senior Curator, Ceramics and Glass at the V&A.Alun Graves talk will focus on his research of Simon’s work and the development and curation of the exhibition ‘Expressionist Potter’ first seen at the Victoria & Albert Museum in 2014.
Walter Keeler – Potter. Walter Keeler will talk about his experience of Simon as a student at UWE Bristol, and their subsequent friendship and creative discussions throughout Simon’s career.
Alex McErlain – Potter, writer, lecturer. ‘It’s only pottery’ the work of Simon Carroll in the context of Contemporary Ceramics’.
Simon Carroll described his work as being ‘only pottery’ but many others feel it has significance far beyond this simple description. His work has been compared to many differing areas of practice ranging from abstract expressionism to folk art. Alex McErlain will explore some of the ideas raised by these descriptions whilst focussing on some specific forms that Carroll worked on.

10.15am Powerpoint Presentation – my work, inspiration, shows, studio/gallery etc

1. Handbuilding techniques:
Gouging out a solid form, coiling, slab building, adding clay, scraping away clay, combining these techniques, adding texture, adding pattern, creating strata lines.
2. Different forms I make:
Standing forms, strata forms, troughs, platters, solid textural pieces
( I’ll prep these pieces beforehand so I can give a demo of each of the above)
1 pm LUNCH
2pm Workshop
I’ll bring clay, tools, rocks, coral, found objects, sketchbooks. Images for inspiration
