INTRODUCING A NEW SLATE CLAY BODY. Free samples now available at The Potters’ Gallery, Conwy. All samples are various mixes of a new slate clay body made principally from waste material from the Welsh slate industry. It is an earthenware type body firing a light orange to brown colour under oxidation, [dark brown to manganese purple under reduction].Its firing range is 1040 – 1120 deg. C and vitrified at 1120 C.It has some interesting characteristics, which include low shrinkage on the coarse version, cracking and warp resistance and very good fastening properties.[I have broken a dry pot, rejoined the piece and fired it, [raw glazed], without any sign that it had been broken]! There are 4 different versions to try. M1 and M2 are very similar bodies with M1 slightly less plastic. [12% shrinkage @ 1120C] M3 is the finest and most plastic of the bodies. M4 is the coarsest and a crank / raku body suitable for tiles, hand building and Raku etc. [5% shrinkage]. I suspect all versions can be used for raku or smoke firing. Try them and see!
