Irish E Boat National Championships 2009

The Irish E Boat National Championships 2009 were held in Clontarf Yacht & Boat Club on 10th – 12th July. There were 14 entries from Clontarf and Skerries at this year’s event. The PRO, Ian Sargent and crew managed to deliver, as usual, the six races over 3 days in very mixed and demanding conditions.

Friday provided ideal conditions and racing was very close and competitive over the first W/L course. Pat Gilmour in “Escapade” held off last year’s champion Pat O’Neill in “OctopussE” in a tight finish with Paul Hick in “Easy Go” in third. The second race was another W/L course and again “Escapade” got to the finish ahead of 2007 champion Peter O’Hara in “Eagle Eye” and “Euro 1” in third.

Saturday saw the conditions worsen and Ian Sargent moved the fleet into the calmer waters inside the Dublin Port harbour walls and set 2 Olympic courses. The first race saw several general recalls and the black flag was used to great effect. Pat O’Neill in “OctopussE” managed to hold off Peter O’Hara in “Eagle Eye” and Robbie O’Rourke in “Chancer” in a nailbiting finish, with “Escapade” finishing in fourth place. The fourth race was again started under black flag and “Eagle Eye”, “OctopussE” and “Escapade” fought tack for tack in worsening conditions. The gun went to “Eagle Eye” with “Escapade in second and “OctopussE” in third.

Sunday was again inside as conditions had not improved. The fifth race was W/L and still black flagged. “Eagle Eye” led from the start and was only overtaken by “Escapade” after an error at the leeward mark. “Escapade” won closely followed by “Eagle Eye” and “OctopussE”. The final race again saw “Escapade” finish ahead of “OctopussE” and “Eagle Eye”.

The PRO, Ian Sargent and crew, were heaped with praise from all the competitors for successfully completing the six races in very trying conditions.

Pat Gilmour was declared the National Champion and his crew of Ray Wall, Clare Mallon and Martina Beck celebrated a well deserved victory.
