Today  there are some animals which look very much like some of the ancient animals. So by studying them, scientists can have some idea of life. No one can be completely sure how prehistoric animals lived. But luckily there are creatures in the world on earth millions and millions of years ago.

Coelacanths :

In  Indian Ocean lives a fish that not only looks like pre-historic fish, it is one! Fish called  coelacanths lived  in the ocean for many millions of years. Scientists thought they had died out about 50 million years ago. Then in 1938 some fishermen caught a strange - looking  fish off the coast of South Africa. Scientists were amazed to see that it was a coelacanth. The coelacanths are much like their prehistoric ancestors of many millions of years ago , except they are bigger. Their bodies are blue-ish-grey and covered with rough, heavy scales. They eat small fish.

Moderates :

The first elephant-like animals, the moderates, had neither trunk nor tusks. But over millions of years different kinds of elephants developed. Today there are only two kinds of elephants on earth: Asian elephants with small ears, and the bigger African elephants with large  flapping ears.
