What is a barn dance? - It's a good night out for everyone.
| A barn dance or ceilidh or folk
dance, call it what you will, gets people dancing
together in sets of different sizes depending on
the individual dance. The dances are suitable for all ages. They can be quite lively but the caller will set the pace to suit the dancers so don't be afraid of having a go. In some dances you will be mainly with your selected partner but some are progressive which means that you change partner every cycle of the dance. Progressive dances are a great way of meeting other people but you're not with them long before you move on again. The caller will get people onto the floor, organise you into sets and show you what to do by walking you through the dance before the music starts. When the music is playing, the caller will be ready to help if necessary. It doesn't matter if you don't get it quite right as long as you enjoy yourself. The music consists of jigs, reels, polkas, slip jigs, hornpipes and waltzes. Look at the sample programme page for the tunes and dances of Hot Punch |
If you want to organise your own barn dance, have a look at the "Hints" page.
