Canadian Coastguard ship Tsekoa II

The Tsekoa II was originally built for the Canadian Public Works of Canada in 1985 by Allied Shipbuilders. The vessel was used for maintenance and repair of buoys, docks and other marine structures in the numerous small harbours along the British Columbia Pacific coastline. In the early 90s Tsekoa II was sold to the Canadian Coastguard. In addition to navigation aid maintenance the Tsekoa II undertakes fishery patrol duties for the Canadian Coastguard and is attached to the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Pacific, Unit 12 - Halfmoon Bay.

The model was constructed from a kit supplied by Model Slipway. The hull is of fibre glass, deck and superstrure and crane of styrene plastic. The model has a Robbe bow thruster and main motors are two 555 from Model Motors Direct. The electronics comprise three Action electronic controllers and an Action mixer. The radio gear is a four channel 40Mhz FM system from Futaba.Two 6volt 4.6 Ah lead acid batteries provide the mainpower plus a 6v NiMH receiver battery. The drive set up makes use of a mixer from Action using one stick with helm input to give independent programmed motor commands. Dimensions are length 845mm x 235mm beam. The kit is usually finished in the original grey and buff of the Canadian Public Works which looks fine but I have chosen to paint my model in the Canadian Coastguard red and white. I have also modified the model in some respects to reflect modifications carried out during Tsekoa II's carreer using photographs kindly provided by the Canadian Coastguard. STOP PRESS - In September 2008 I entered Tsekoa II into the MPBA's National Navigation Competition held at Balne Moor near Pontefract Yorkshire. The boat won the kit class and also the craftsmanship cup.
