Made an isolated appearance for Lyndon Lynch before joining Bowers United. Followed Steve Wheeler to Romford, and was called up from the reserves for occasional first team duty and even made the no. 12 shirt his own - regarding the bench at Bognor as being "one of the best he'd ever sat on". Finally got a run in the side when Wheeler became first team manager. Had a penalty saved at Molesey but compensated in the next match with a scorching (and wind-assisted) free-kick to give a scratch Boro team the lead at a full-strength Canvey Island. Used to play on Sundays under the name Paul Smith, telling refs that team-mates call him Doyley because "I look like Doyle from The Professionals". Later turned up playing against Boro for Bowers United, scoring an injury-time winner from a free-kick in the Essex Senior Cup in September 2002, before retiring early the following season due to a recurring shoulder injury. Moved on to manage Basildon United following season and made a late cameo appearance against Romford.
