Midfielder known as Wocky, for reasons that probably still wouldn't mean anything even if they were explained. Made a brief pre-season appearance at Grays Athletic in July 2003, in which he went off injured after a blow above the eye which swelled up to the size of a golf ball. Remained with the reserves on and off in the meantime until finally making his competitive debut for the first team two and a half years later. Had been named as sub with the first team a few weeks previously, but was a victim of being too clever for his own good with his suggestion that the subs get changed last because of the small changing rooms at Bowers & Pitsea - leaving himself without any kit to get changed into because non-playing reserve Paul Kavanagh had taken the last set. Certainly made his mark in the New Year with two goals and two red cards in the first four games, also incurring numerous cautions during a two-month spell in the first team squad chiefly through over-enthusiastic tackling although obvious need to shift a few pounds tended to disguise considerable ability. Made a surprise return for the final game of the season and was sent off again early in the second half, to complete an extraordinary record of three dismissals in just twelve appearances for the first team.
