In the background of this picture can be seen the coaling stage of New England M.P.D. The photograph has been taken from the G.N.R. section of Westwood Bridge looking north. This bridge and the parallel Spital Bridge had two widths of carriage way - a wide section over the G.N.R. tracks and a narrower section over the former Midland Railway tracks. They existed in this form causing road traffic bottle necks at peak periods until they were rebuilt for the electrification of the E.C.M.L. in the 1980's
