MIDLAND & SOUTH WESTERN JUNCTION RAILWAY 'L' Class 4-4-0
There were a total of 9 locomotives of this class supplied to the M.& S. W. J. R. by the North British Locomotive Company, the first, No.1, which
is depicted in these images was delivered in July 1905 at a reputed cost of 2600 pounds. They had 18in x 26in inside cylinders, Belpaire firebox,
Ramsbottom safety valves, 160lb. boiler and 5ft 9in driving wheels. The livery carried by these locomotives was Crimson Lake. After being taken over
by the G.W.R. at the 'grouping' in 1923 they were rebuilt with many 'standard' Swindon fittings including cabs and safety valve covers. No.1 was
renumbered to 1119 and was not withdrawn until May 1935
The images shown here are from an unknown family's photograph album which I have acquired, so I have no details of the photographer but
the photographs would have been taken prior to the 1923 renumbering. It is believe that No.1 is at Cirencester Works for repairs after a cylinder blow-out. These three photographs appear to be professionally taken, possibly by the
local newspaper? so the album may have once belonged to one of those on the foot plate perhaps?
