Just a quick note to let you know I have arrived. Just now I am in Edinburgh
on a quick sightseeing trip and I am using an internet cafe to get this
out. My computer is not accepting the ethernet card so I don't have internet
in my room yet.
The last few days have been spent getting me settled in and figuring out
grocery stores and such. I did make a trip to Costco and got lots of non-perishable
food stuff to keep me eating for a few months. Everything is so different
- I couldn't find hamburger, its called minced steak.
The city of Glasgow is great, a lot like Edinburgh for those of you who
have been there. Very old and medieval looking with narrow streets and
tall stone buildings. Everything is made from stone - houses, fences,
and cobblestone roads. The University (called The Uni) is beautiful with
grass quads surrounded by 5 story gothic stone buildings.
My dorm is very adequate. A huge desk and a lot of closet space. The shower,
however, could use a bit of help. It is just a corner of the bathroom
sectioned off with a shower curtain. That means that water goes ALL OVER
the bathroom floor every time its used. Obviously it takes some technique
that I have yet to master.
My mom is having a terrible time understanding the accent, but I love
it. Yesterday I found my self counting in my head with a glasgow accent.
I can't wait to really pick it up. It's very lilting and tonal.
Well, I must sign off, my train back to Glasgow is about to depart. I'll
write more as soon as I get another chance.
