Here is the route I usually take to get from Queen Margaret residence halls to the main Uni campus. Follow Bellshaugh Rd till you reach the Botanic Gardens, walk all the way through them to the main gate on Great Western Rd. Cross diagonally and walk down Byers Rd till you can turn left onto Great George. Then take the second right and continue to University Ave. Go left onto University Ave and you should see the main gates on the right.

The underground stop closest to QM is just a block or so further on down Byers Rd.
