So you are coming to Glasgow? Where are you going to stay during your studies? Where should visitors stay? Below is a list of some of the University's accommodations, notes about a few of the local hotels, and advise for getting a private flat.

Residence Halls
Queen Margaret - QM was definitely the top choice for North American vet students in my year. Twelve out of 18 of the NA students stayed at QM, and as far as I know, we were all still glad to be there at the end of the year. In fact, many of us considered staying in QM for the next year also. Its a bit more expensive than Wolfson, but all rooms have private bathrooms and you don't have to pack up all your stuff and move out over Easter break. Compared to a private flat, it is quite a bit cheaper and provides high speed internet access (when it works!) QM is split up into twelve buildings and the older students seem to be placed together in the centre cluster. Also, the management seem to be pretty good about placing vet students together if you ask for it on the application.
From QM, it is about a twenty minute walk to the Uni and to the closest underground stop (Hillhead), a thirty minute walk to the vet school and just a couple of blocks to the bus stops on Great Western Rd. Maps

Wolfson Hall - Wolfson is the closest hall to the vet school, being about a five minute walk away, and it is also the only catered hall. However, from what I hear, the food isn't very good and there is very little selection. There is one city bus route - 59 - that stops near the hall and runs into town and there is also a university run van service offered in the evenings (to and from the Uni). If you choose to walk in, it is about a forty-five minute walk to the Uni.

Private Flats

Those North Americans who are not living at Queen Margaret have procured private flats, mostly in the Anniesland area. If you choose to have a flat to yourself, its around £400-500 per month. However, if you get a two bedroom and share with another student, it works out to about £250-350 each per month. The easiest way to find a flat is to use a letting agent (realtor), of which there are several who have offices on Byres Rd. None of the students had much trouble finding a place.

Most of the locations in the West End would be considered "good" areas to live. Maryhill and Partick are both inexpensive, but they are not areas I would walk in after dark.

Local Hotels

Heritage Hotel - A reasonable priced hotel located on Great Western Rd just before Byres Rd. My Mom and aunt stayed there when they came over with me and it was quite adequate. Make sure you request a room on the lower floors (its a long climb up to the forth floor)!
Belhaven - located at the corner of Great Western and Kirklee.
Belhaven Hotel - Located at the intersection of Kirklee and Great Western it is only a couple of blocks from Queen Margaret. It appears to have reasonable prices (£35-50 for a single room), but I don't know anyone who has stayed there.
