Culzean Castle (pronounced Cull-ane) is a lovely Georgian castle is set on a stunning cliff top position 150ft above the sea. Although castles have existed at this location since the 13th century, the castle as it stands today was designed by Robert Adams (1728-1792), one of Scotland's famous architects. The interior is gorgeously decorated with a magnificent oval staircase at the entrance (click here for photos of the interior).
During World War II it was used as the strategic base for the allies and a top floor flat was donated to General Eisenhower as a thank you for his help in protecting Britain.
The extensive grounds (600 acres) form a lovely country park with deer, gardens, sea coast, and an aviary.
