Bupadhengo Primary School Henry van Straubenzee was due to have taught in Bupadhengo Primary School in January 2003, as a volunteer with the gap year organisation Africa and Asia Venture – www.aventure.co.uk This was where our work started. Completed projects have included:
The 4 classrooms built in 2004 now accommodate over 300 children who previously had their lessons outside under the shade of trees. The additional facilities we have provided the school has enable the average class size at the school to reduce from 110 to 50, resulting in a greatly improved quality of education delivered by the school. In 2008, the school’s Primary Leaving Exam results were the best in Kamuli district for the third year running, with over 50% of children achieving the highest grade. Back in 2003 only 15%of the children were getting this mark. The enthusiastic Head Teacher, Mr. Godfrey Samanya, had this to say, “This improved performance has come about because of the help the Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund has given the school. Thanks to your help we have become a model school for the whole district”. In September 2008 Godfrey informed us that Bupadhengo Primary School was awarded a shield for the best managed school in the Busoga Diocese, which encompasses seven districts and therefore over 600 primary schools. He says: "I believe all these achievements are a result of your contributions to this school. I thank you very much and God bless you." During October 2008 we built 2 new classrooms for the 5 – 7 year olds to reduce class sizes to ensure academic standards continue to improve. In addition we build an 8 stanza latrine block and renovated 2 teachers' houses. The funds for the classrooms and latrines (as pictured right) were kindly donated by the parents of Ludgrove School at a charity concert in March 2008. Henry himself attended Ludgrove, www.ludgrove.net., between the ages of 8 – 13. Head Teacher: Mr Godfrey Samanya Number of pupils in March 2009: 2150 |
