Kawule Primary School Kawule Primary School is a remote rural school in Kamuli District serving a community who depend upon growing rice and maize for their livelihood. The school was built thanks to a government grant in 1998. This enabled 6 good quality classrooms to be built and 4 teachers' houses. The school’s enrolment quickly began to rise as parents, who had previously kept their children at home, began sending them to school as a result of the new facilities. The result was that the school’s enrolment tripled in the space of one year placing great strain upon the school’s resources. The community responded by fundraising in order to build more classrooms. Unfortunately the former head teacher cut corners in order to get buildings up quickly. The result is that a number of the classrooms and teacher’s houses developed major structural problems. Two of the teacher’s houses collapsed, the roof of one of the classrooms fell in and the block of latrines were washed into the pit beneath them, as a result of heavy rain. This means that over 600 children, who attend the school, share just 4 latrines, which cause long queues to form at break times. Children have their lessons in classrooms which are structurally unsafe and liable to fall down in the next storm. Lessons are abandoned whenever the wind becomes stronger as the school fears the roof will fall in on the children. Despite these difficult conditions the staff work hard and the children are very keen to learn. Academic standards have improved since the current head teacher joined the school and with some support they should continue to do so. Completed projects have included:
This was possible thanks to a generous donation from Christ’s Hospital Secondary School in spring 2009. In the future we hope to assist the school further by building new teachers' houses, to replace those that collapsed, and provide 8 new latrines. Head Teacher: Mr Batabaire Simon Number of Pupils in March 2009: 670
