St Michael Girls Boarding Primary School

St Michael's is situated in the poverty stricken corner of Iganga District, next door to St Mulumbas.  The head teacher, a nun, Sister Teopista is a wonderful lady who has been at the school for 8 years.  She has done an excellent job under very difficult circumstances, particularly, since St Michael's is a missionary school and as such receives no help from the government.

There are 22 teachers, of which 16 sleep at the school.  The number of female students is rising.  There were 750 in 2008 and now in 2009 there are 850, of which 185 are boarders.  It appears to be a school that on the surface does not really need help but this is because Sister Teopista has worked hard over the years to put what little funding she has had to good use.

Africa & Asia Venture, the gap year organisation that Henry should have worked with, has had a long standing connection with the school.  The AV Foundation www.avfoundation.org  has recently donated funds through The Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund in order to remove the asbestos roof off the 26’ x 22’ dining hall and replace it with iron sheets.  The external walls, as you can see from the picture on the right, are not plastered.  Much of the brickwork has been damaged by the elements and will need replacing in places.  We will replace the windows and repair the concrete floor.  We will also paint the building inside and out.  This will bring the building up to the standard of our new buildings.

We are hoping for this work to start in August.
