St Mulumbas Primary School St Mulumbas Primary School is situated in a poverty stricken corner of Iganga District. The region relies heavily on coffee and almost a decade of poor harvests, as a result of pests, has crippled the local economy. The school was founded by Catholic missionaries in the 1930s to accommodate around 200 children. Since then the local population has quadrupled and the school now has close to 1,000 children who were still using the original classrooms. The result was that classes were overcrowded and many classes were taking place under the shade of trees or in unsuitable temporary structures. In 2006, thanks to the support of Queen Elizabeth Grammar School Penrith, Trinity Hall College Cambridge, Jesus College Cambridge and Raazik Gatrad, we built a new four classroom block at the school with an office and store room. Completed projects have included:
The community donated over 20,000 bricks to help with this project, no easy task, which shows just how committed the community are to developing the school. The completion of this building means that all children at the school now have their lessons sitting at a desk in a classroom. The result has been improved performance in examinations, and happier and healthier children. Over the last decade the community managed to pool what little resources they have in order to build a block of classrooms. These rooms are simply the ‘shells’ of classrooms. They have only walls and a roof (and in some cases parts of the walls have collapsed). There are no floors, windows, doors, plaster or paint on the walls. We would like to help the school to bring these classrooms up to a decent standard. At the beginning of 2009 the NFRN, London District, very kindly donated money raised in a raffle and we have been able to transform one of these classrooms into a library for the school. (see photo to the right). Also two Africa & Asia Venture gap year volunteers, Tara Acland and Chloe Crisp, kindly donated the shelves for the books. In Uganda schools are expected to provide their staff with living accommodation. Schools that cannot do so cannot recruit or retain the best teachers and as such struggle to deliver quality education to their students. St Mulumba’s, is typical of many Ugandan primary schools and cannot provide houses for all of the staff. We would like to build a further 4 teachers' houses at the school in order to solve this problem and carry out repairs to some of the existing houses.
