Home Fires Burning is set in the fictional Staffordshire village of Shuffleton. It follows the ups and downs of village life during the World War Two, focusing in particular on the Jameson family. Three main groups are seen in action in the village, the Home Guard, the WVS and the Land Girls. These groups are brought together in a fund-raising effort to raise enough money to buy a ‘Shuffleton Spitfire’ for the RAF.
Mr and Mrs Jameson are both pillars of strength in their own ways. Son Ed is a miner who would much rather be off fighting, daughter Jenny pines for her fiance Alex, while Emily falls for an Italian prisoner of war and youngest daughter Agnes just wants to enjoy her sixteenth birthday!
Mrs Shelpton is the well-to-do unofficial head of the village who seems to have everything under control but has her own personal tragedy to deal with.
Brummy Alice arrives in Shuffleton to join the Land Girls and to shake things up a bit, especially for Ed!
Throw in a dotty vicar, an ARP warden with a stutter and paraffin cakes and you’ve got a sure fire recipe for a show full of fun, which nevertheless is not afraid to tackle the more serious side of war and its implications.
Home Fires Burning is full of wartime favourites such as ‘White Cliffs of Dover’, ‘I’m gonna get lit up’ and ‘Keep the home fires burning’ combined with popular songs of the time such as ‘Whispering Grass’ and ‘Don’t Get Around Much Anymore’. There are also three original numbers written especially for Home Fires Burning, ‘You Won’t Get Through’ (the rousing Home Guard Anthem), ‘Fires on the Horizon’ (a dramatic reminder of the damage caused by air raids on our cities) and ‘Make Do and Mend’ (a heartfelt appeal by the wives and mothers of Shuffleton).
Home Fires Burning was premiered by CWAGMS (as ‘We’ll Meet Again’) in May 2003 and was a great commercial success for the company, with over 1000 people coming to see the show over four nights. The audiences loved it, leaving each night having laughed, cried and sang along with the villagers in Shuffleton.
