Events and |Happenings Lots of social and educational events take place in the belly-dance world. This is a spot for me to reflect on a few of those moments..... Dallam Summer School
On Thursday 20th August 2009, I offered a Beginner's Taster Day in belly dancing at Dallam Community Summer School. It was a great day with everyone really falling into the spirit of it. We played with veils, sticks and tried on costumes. We even learned some belly-dance. Every attendee was a belly dance virgin but I managed to corrupt most of them, and later fielded enquiries for regular classes in their area. The lure of the sequin strikes again! I hope to have some pictures to show soon.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Preston Hafla On Friday 26th June, Anne Kingston held a hafla at Preston and a number of my students and I went along. It was a small hafla, but nevertheless a lot of fun. Some great dances - not least 'dragon raqs' a wonderful blend of China and Egypt - yes really!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ford '09 Every year, Kay Taylor of Farida Dance, organises a residential belly dance weekend in Ford Castle in Northumberland. It's one of my favourite events and I always try to go. This year was no exception and I had a lot of fun and learned loads of stuff - new and old.

During the day we had some great workshops with Claire Novis and during the evening we had some fantastic performances from belly dancers all over the area. I am delighted to say that we had TWO performances from members of the Appleby
class. Firstly Emma and Phoebe danced to a Turkish pop song "la bomba"
using a choreography that was entirely their own. The Penrith crowd are
always supportive of first time performers, but this time they really gave the
girls a great reception - and it was well-deserved too!
Emma, Phoebe, Julie C. and me, celebrating. Our second performance was again from the Appleby class. A group of 4 called "Al-ila" (which means family) danced to a short drum solo. The four dancers were phoebe, Emma and their Mums, Julie P. and Julie C. I found both the music and choreography when I joined in a belly class in Florida last year. The teacher very kindly gave me the music and her written choreo - thank you Jeanette. We kept all the moves as written but changed the floor pattern to fit our performance space. The girls were extremely nervous, but did a great performance. I was SO proud of them.

I had an absolutely wonderful time succumbing completely to Cairo's charm.
