Rhiwbina 2nds v Caerau Ely 2nds

Sat 14th April 2007

Caedelyn Park

The 2nds were on the verge of making history today-if they won the game against Caerau Ely 2nds they would win the SA Brains Second Team Div 2 Title and get promotion for next season- a feat to equal the Firsts.

Some of these players had been drafted in to play for the Firsts in their midweek Silver Ball clash against Penallta and showed terrific guts and skill in stepping up for that game and were equally keen to win todays fixture.

The Squirrels got off to a flyer on a scorching day and the backs began to cut through the stubborn Caerau defenders and tries came thick and fast for Shaggy and Birdy out on the touchlines. Rhiwbina were out of sight by half time having run in 5 unanswered tries and a number conversions from the trusty boot of evergreen Outside Half Richy Marshall.

In the second half the Squirrels made a number of substitutions to ensure the whole squad got a game and this led to more tries for Birdy, Rodders, Geraint and Lanky which put the game out of our opponents reach. To be fair to Caerau they fought for every ball and their forward effort was magnificent in the face of a very good Rhiwbina 8. They kept battling to the bitter end and deserve credit for that-even turning down a number of kickable penalties late in the game to run back at us.

Fantastic effort from the whole Rhiwbina 2nds Squad with outstanding performances from Matt in the back row and Birdy in the backs.

The final score was in the region of 48-0

A great way to round off a fantastic season for Rhiwbina RFC with the seconds getting promotion and only losing 1 League game all year.

A special mention to Captain Dai Hobbs who has led from the front and who has helped produce a fantastic team who have played exciting and enjoyable rugby all season!

On this showing next season is something to look forward to.

The Seconds are also in the Semi Final of the SA Brains East District 2nd Team Cup and play Fairwater 2nds on Thursday 26th April-Venue to be Confirmed!
